Weekend of Snow

Sunday Morning 

I don't usually do Photos on Sunday. 

The Hemp crew worked late into the night on Saturday.  Some of them were back Sunday Morning and some worked all day.

The weather forecast was for rain and snow around ten.  A lot of Shane's equipment was outside and he moved it to house three.  

All of the hemp plants that weren't harvested were put in house two which was covered with old poly.  They would be safe from any rain or snow.

The last thing on today was to cover the carrot plants with more Styrofoam to protect them from freezing.

Monday

I moped the bathroom.  Over the months the dusts settles to the floor.  It came off with a lot of soap, water, and scrubbing.   The is a small rug in front of the toilet.

There were people were still working in the hemp.  They have most of it harvested. 

I took another photo of the carrot plants.  There was a little snow on it.

Adam came to fix the washer.  He couldn't find anything wrong with it.  Carol then washed a batch of clothing.

Robert and Frank and Snow

It started snowing around two this morning.  After breakfast there was six inches of snow on our driveway.  It snowed most of the day and added another four inches of snow.

First thing after breakfast was to turn on the furnace in house six.  There was about ten inches of snow on the poly.  I remove the deep snow in front of the door.   I turned the on the furnace, the gas was ignited, and then I hung the poly Curtin over the fan on the north west corner.  I left and came back because the furnace shut off.  I followed the thermostat wire to the thermostat which was covered with dried left over tomato plants.  I turned it up and the furnace turned on.  I left it on the rest of the day.

This is the first picture I took this morning.  It is ponderosa pine decorated with frosty snow.

House six is warming some.  The snow is beginning to slide.

The snow on the top of the roof also is beginning to slide.  By the end of the day, most of the heavy snow had slid down the sides.

Robert and Frank were here.  Robert prepared a planting bed in house six. He removed all of the plant material, then drove the tiller through it five or six times.  We stretched the twine to show the boarder on both sides.  Other areas will be prepare at a later date.  It is ready for carrot, red beats, chard, turnips, radishes, etc.

Robert is planting the Styrofoam trays with leafy vegetable seeds.  Frank is helping.

 Robert transplanted a lot of the lettuce. 

I had bush snap beans here that were not doing well.  He pulled them up and replaced the with lettuce.

On the left are the lettuce plants left over.  Will find a place for them.

We have a lot of Styrofoam plug cells.  I cut them into five inch sections.  Robert finished the day by planting various seeds of leafy plants.

We have had problems with snails and slugs.  Frank brought three cans of beer.  He poured it into soft cat food cans.  They are partially buried in the soil.  It is said that beer attracts slugs and snails.  We will see tomorrow afternoon.

Colder Weather, Securing the North End of House One.

I drove to the dentist's office to pay a bill.  On the way I saw the pretty yellow flowers.  I had to stop and take a picture, but I thought that I left my phone home.  I went home and Carol went to her DUP meeting.  I walked over and took several pictures.  After closer examination I could see that they were gum weeds.  They looked so pretty because they had been mowed down several times and bloomed on short stems.  Normally they have tall stems and are not landscape plants.

There was a cold breeze blowing below the doors on the north end of house six. The block and pieces of wood covered the space below the doors.

Some pretty aster were growing the upper pad.  We used to grow these, but there were not very impressive in the pot. The one below look really pretty good.

I wanted to plant some red beats.  An idea forced itself into my head.  I could easily space the plants by using a Styrofoam tray.  One tray had 338 cells.  I had to make the raised level.  I used the 2x4 to smooth it off.  It would have been much easier with the help of another person.

I was planting red beats and the seed was to large and got stuck in the Styrofoam cells.  I use a drill and a 5/16 inch bit to make the hole in the bottom of the cell larger.  I tried several other size bits there were either too large or too small.

I was kneeling on the right of the Styrofoam dropping a seed into each cell.  I was hard to lean over and drop the seed.  Idea.  I got a large piece of plywood set it in front of the Styrofoam.  With the chair, I could sit there and lean over and drop in a seed.  I used tweezers. that didn't work.  I used a little spoon and picked up the seed with the spoon and dropped in the seed.  That was to slow.  Finally, I put the seeds in a small container and was able to pick one or two seeds.

I left the Styrofoam in place when I watered them.  I think that the beets will germinated and grow up through the cells.  after the leaves come through I will remove the Styrofoam and the beets will establish them selves.

As I was walking to turn off the water, I walked past the Saffron plants.  They were blooming.  I thought they were through blooming.  I took a closer look and there were a bunch of flowers with the reddish, orange stigmas.   I left some chard boiling on the stove, and hurried back to the house.  I lowered the temperature and went back and cut off the flowers.  When in the house I removed the stigmas as you see in the photo below.  There may be more tomorrow.
