Eight Inches by Noon

Yesterday's forecast was snow all day. It started snowing this morning at seven and eight inches by noon.

I took a few photos which are posted below.

This a small radish with a chuck of radish missing.  The match give a comparison as the size.  I thought that mice were eating them. I caught a mouse and set out some mouse bait.  Nothing has eaten the bait and still something is eating the radishes.  

I had some cucumbers plants growing and the are beginning to die.

I removed the old cucumber plants and replaced them with the seedlings.

I caught this cat napping in house three.  He has white socks and his tail is missing.  I see him almost every day.

Yesterday, I put enough beer in the can to cover the bottom.  When I looked at it this morning there was some beer but no slugs.  I filled it to the top with beer.

Sunday

When I went out to the greenhouse after church. there was on big slug in the can.

I took it out and got a picture.  It was a little over an inch long.

I found another can and move it a couple of rows to the right, buried it in the soil, and filled it with beer.  The beer foamed up, I topped it off with a little more beer.

Above is how it looked after the foam went away.

Monday

I caught another large slug.

This fuzzy picture is of a small portion container full of beer.  I put it out Sunday afternoon and this morning there were two slugs.  I set it by the pole beans which were badly eaten.

It snowed all day so far.  I made a path across the lawn to the hen house through eight inches of snow.

Here I am standing in front of the garage looking across the driveway to the street.  Here there is seven inches of heavy new snow.

Early this afternoon I shovel eight or nine inches of snow oft the front sidewalk and steps.

Backyard Sprinklers Are Working

This picture does not show very much.  It represent what I wanted to do last night, but didn't get it done until this morning.  There was a yellow jacket nest in the south gabled end of the garage.  I got a large piece of two inch PVC and pushed the end up to the nest, twisted and the nest and yellow jacket fell through the pipe to the ground.  I smashed the nest with my foot and stepped on all of the yellow jackets until they we all dead.  The picture above is of a wasp nest on the north end of the garage.  I used the same PVC pipe to knock it down.  It came through the pipe and it was easy to smash it and the yellow jackets.

The thermostat is not working in house six.  I can turn it on at the circuit breaker, but it will not turn itself off.  I tried to get a part number.  There wasn't one.  I took off the cover to see the number inside.  The letters/numbers not legible. 

I cut down a lettuce plant for the chickens.  They really like the fresh lettuce.

Here is the thermostat.  I was able to go on line and find a picture of one that looked like this one.  I finally found the right one.  I called the company and asked some questions about it.  I then ordered it. It came to $105 and I should get it next week.

The bathroom basin drained so slowly.  I removed the goose neck and the stopper lever.  I cleaned out all the black gook.  It drains perfectly now.

I went to Fillmore to get the parts needed to hook the water line to the sprinkler system.  I had to use a section of garden hose to connect them together.  I the water is now going to the sprinkler in the back lawn.

One sprinkler head is partially hidden in the shrubbery.  It sprayed a little water.  I took it apart and cleaned the filter.  Now it works well.

The sprinkler heads that I had would not work here.  I put on a sprinkler that had a 45 degree spray.  

The petunia bed had not done well at all.  Yesterday morning we planted more petunias.  Last night I spread some slug and snail bait.  Today we found six dead snails.  Two were fairly small but the others were large.  They have stripped off the leave of many of them.

Robert and Frank and Snow

It started snowing around two this morning.  After breakfast there was six inches of snow on our driveway.  It snowed most of the day and added another four inches of snow.

First thing after breakfast was to turn on the furnace in house six.  There was about ten inches of snow on the poly.  I remove the deep snow in front of the door.   I turned the on the furnace, the gas was ignited, and then I hung the poly Curtin over the fan on the north west corner.  I left and came back because the furnace shut off.  I followed the thermostat wire to the thermostat which was covered with dried left over tomato plants.  I turned it up and the furnace turned on.  I left it on the rest of the day.

This is the first picture I took this morning.  It is ponderosa pine decorated with frosty snow.

House six is warming some.  The snow is beginning to slide.

The snow on the top of the roof also is beginning to slide.  By the end of the day, most of the heavy snow had slid down the sides.

Robert and Frank were here.  Robert prepared a planting bed in house six. He removed all of the plant material, then drove the tiller through it five or six times.  We stretched the twine to show the boarder on both sides.  Other areas will be prepare at a later date.  It is ready for carrot, red beats, chard, turnips, radishes, etc.

Robert is planting the Styrofoam trays with leafy vegetable seeds.  Frank is helping.

 Robert transplanted a lot of the lettuce. 

I had bush snap beans here that were not doing well.  He pulled them up and replaced the with lettuce.

On the left are the lettuce plants left over.  Will find a place for them.

We have a lot of Styrofoam plug cells.  I cut them into five inch sections.  Robert finished the day by planting various seeds of leafy plants.

We have had problems with snails and slugs.  Frank brought three cans of beer.  He poured it into soft cat food cans.  They are partially buried in the soil.  It is said that beer attracts slugs and snails.  We will see tomorrow afternoon.
