Tomato Plants - Gone

A little cool this morning.  The tomato plants in a quart bottle in the kitchen window are rooting nicely.

I put them in these square pots.  The photo doesn't show to much, but in a couple of weeks they will be doing well.

The transplants are a clone of the tomatoes in the above basket.

I transplanted these butterfly bushes yesterday.  This morning I used two bamboo stakes to hold them upright.

Next, I removed all of the tomato plants on the row on the right side except six on the north end.  I was coming back after lunch to finish, but that didn't happen.

While removing the tomato plants there were some that looked like there was no frost damage.  I will check them after they have turned red to see how they taste.

We began removing tomato plants in the west garden.  They were held up with tomato cages made with tree baskets. It was pretty warm so I removed my coat.

the dead tomato plants are laying on the ground.  The conduit pipes were in the ground nearly three feet.  With a pair of vice grips, I was able to pull them out.

I put the tomato vines on the west side of the garden where I have been growing pinion pines and Utah Junipers.  I hope they decay some during the winter.

Tomatoes and House One

This morning I called Duff Shelley in American Fork telling him that Robert will pick up the lawnmower.  I also, mailed a check.

Robert came, but did not pick up the lawnmower. Frank's trailer was still being used by someone else.  But we did begin to work in house two on the grafted tomato plants.

He cut part way through the grafted stem which force most of the growth to develop at the cut.  Some of the grafts did not take and some tipped over at the cut. The red clamp is holding top part upright.

We then began transplanting the tomato plant in house one.  Those tomato plants in quart pots require a big hole.  Robert began by digging a hole and then putting the plant into the and back filling with the soil.  We put about a tablespoon of Osmocote in each hole.  The 2x2 eight foot redwood is marked every eighteen inches.  He began digging five or six holes, then put in the fertilizer, and then the plant.  After awhile, he dug the holes and I added the fertilizer, and did the back filling.  That went much faster.  We planted two beds each with two rows.   We planted on the east sides tomato plants that were in six packs.  With a smaller hole we planted much faster.

We planted the cherry tomatoes first. Some of those plants had fruit.  We laid down the drip tape and hooked it up to the timer.  Those on the west bed were watered earlier with  a hose.

 Robert fixed one of them.  I fixed one near the end of the line.  Then I found another small leak.  I cut it off and attached a new piece of drip tape with the coupler.  It is pictured above.   got a new piece of drip tape

House One, Almost Done

I filled the bird feeder this morning.  All of the birds in the neighborhood come.  It is gone in twenty-four hours.  Alisha came by and got three more golden current plants.

The photos below represents some of the thing that I did today.

 I found this praying Mantis egg capsule and brought into house two for the Praying Mantis to emerge.  The dark speck in the center is a baby Praying Mantis.

The Toma-hooks are pictured above.  I made them with various kinds of wire.  The twine is rolled up on the hooks which are hanging on the over-head wire waiting for the next crop.

A month ago, Carolyn Stevens brought me some seed.  I transplanted them today.  There are two different corianders, two different basils.  Big leaf and Italian basil.

 Above one is basil.

Curl-leaf parsley. The top two six packs were transplanted two weeks ago and the rest today. There are thirty-six plants.

A plant in house three is blooming.  It has off white colored hanging trumpet blossoms.

I finished this evening in house one.  I opened the two north doors. The eggplants against the west wall are gone.  I put all the plant material north of the north end of house one.  The winds that we had a couple of days ago covered all everything with dust.  When I cut them down, raked them, and made a pile on the outside; it was dusty.  It is on my clothes and in my eyes and nose.  The cleaning that if have left is on the east side.

Cold Wind and Rain

I wasn't  going to use this photo but decided to.  It is a picture of the chickens huddled under the heating lamp.  Pretty cold tonight.  I put a piece of plywood in front of the hen house.  Also, I lowered the heating lamp a little.

 I took the above picture today of these small tomatoes.  Also, I took a picture of the same tomato plant yesterday.  Wondering if there will be much change each day.

Robert grafted one golden delicious on to dwarf  root stock.  Also three Yellow Banana  cuttings to the same root stock.  He bought a grafting knife and really struggled with getting it done right.

Robert had planned to do the tomato grafting, but Frank forgot to bring the grafting material.  That job is for next week.

Frank brought his trailer.  We loaded the lawn mower onto the trailer.  They will take it to American Fork to be fixed.

I worked in house one for several hours.  All of the old tomato plants are cut down and all the tomato clips are put away.  The two isles on the right are completely clean.  The isle to the left of the cart is mostly clean.  I stacked all the plant material including grass and mellow plants on the north end. of the greenhouse.  I quit before I finished so I could watch the evening news at 5:30.

New Flower Bed

Temple day.  We left a little after four this morning and were home a little after two this afternoon.
I worked in house one at several different times this after noon.  I am slowly removing the tomato plants.  The photo below shows quite a large section where the tomato plants have been cut down and removed.

Looking at the west end of house five.  There is a flower bed on the south side of the door and mostly weeds on the north side of the door.  I cleaned it up this afternoon and hauled the weeds and stuff away.  There are a few randomly place rocks at the bottom of the picture.  They will be places in a much better arrangement.

This seems to be an odd picture.  Several years ago I built a munch of big tubs using cement, perlite, and peat moss.  Over the years they have been broken.  Some of the pieces were in the flower bed below.  I hauled them out to the road where they will become part of the east end driveway.

Rain Most of the Day!! What's Rain

I picked a few things for the vegie share at the post office.  Carol washed them and arranged them order.  They are in the photo below. Egg plant, Pimento peppers, and Romanian cucumbers.   Some were left over.  We are taking them to Las Vegas.

I did not get a before picture.  But the table saw was piled with junk.  To cut a board or move the fence, I would have to move junk.

I cleaned the workbench and the radial arm saw.  There is a small bench to the left of the saw which I also cleaned up and made a device to hold the hole saws.

I tied three more pepper plants to the overhead bar.

We hooked most of the overhead wires the header on both ends of house one.  The weight of the tomato plants pulled the right end of the header of its post.  I got several pipe clamps and a ladder and proceeded to pull it back into its original position.  It would not slide back on its post.  Using crowbar and I was able to lift it up to move it into position.  I wasn't able to take the crowbar out. I tried to block up the header with a half inch PVC Pipe.  It all came apart the header came towards me an knocked me off the ladder.  I was able to stem down.  A screw in the header hit my head a little to the right of my eye.  I dodged the bullet.

Finally I got it back together.  I mad 3/8 inch hole through the header and through the 2 by 4 on the outside.  I put a long bolt through the hole.  With a nut and washer I made it tight and was able to removed the clamps.

Worked All Day

Robert showed up pretty early this morning.  I was still eating my breakfast.  He worked in house six most of the morning.  He pruned all six rows.  I worked some in house one hanging more of the tomato plants there.  This photo doesn't show what I did first.  After lunch we hung two more wires.  You can't see them but they are holding up the post at the right and the one at the left.  Those that I hung on the new wires have so many branches.  After I cut them off,  what is left is pretty thin.

I did some weeding in the cucumber plants.  The cucumber plants don't climb.  I used the tomato clips to support the vine at the top of the cage.  Much of this work was on my knees.

 I helped Carol make sweet relish.  We had cucumbers, but we bought bell peppers at the market.  We ended up with eight half pints.

I finished driving in the stakes for the summer squash.
