A Box for Files

This morning was like yesterday morning.  Another couple of inches of snow.  It was a powder.  I have a card box by my desktop computer in my bedroom where I keep files which contain papers that I get each month.  The files will not stand up straight.  So this morning I began to build a new one out of a thin piece of plywood.

It took me most of the day to finish it.  It sixteen inches by twelve inches wide and depth of eight inches.  It is divided into three compartments.  I will be able to locate the files much faster because they will be standing up.  In the old box they were almost laying down.

I have been saving egg shells for months now.

The leaf miners are destroying our kale and red beats.  I have been spraying the beets and kale with Neem oil.  Today, when I sprayed, I could see the flies flying around.  I took the fly zapper pictured above waving it back and forth.  Every time I hit a fly I could hear this zapping noise.  The were a lot of flies in the radish leaves, which made a lot of noise.  I kept doing that until there were none left.

I  strected a string between the west and east ends of house six that marked the center of the greenhouse.  I marked the center of each 2x6x12 and then moved the board a little to the left or to the right then I dug some holes where the 2x4 posts will be.

Work in House Six

I believe I got a lot done today.  At times it was pretty hot in the greenhouses.  There was a lot of plant material left on the floor of house two.  I cleaned that up.

 I planted these curl leaf parsley the tenth of February.  They were very easy to pull out of the foam tray.  I transplanted them to a jumbo six pack.

 During the night a idea of a simple shelf came to me.  I put it together in less than an hour. I used two four foot weathered  boards. There are four braces under the shelf.  A 2x2 board was screwed to the back edge of the shelf.  This piece was screwed to the wall through pre-drilled holes.  I think that I might make another shell below this one.

 I had a coustomer just before lunch.  I asked them if I could get a picture.  They agreed.  They saw some blue flax and wanted some.  They saw other things and wanted them.  They didn't have any cash or a check book with them, and I don't do credit cards any more.  I said that I take promises.   They ended up getting $80 worth of native plants.  They live in Payson.

 I made this little device to hold some twine that was laying around in house six.  It didn't take long and will be easy to unwind when needed.

 I took off the tomato clamps on dead and dried tomato plants.  The clamps went into a bucket and the stems in the middle isle.

 This photo the end of this job.  I pushed all of the dry plants out the door, using a rake and a pitchfork.  Next I used a Harbor Freight blow and blew out all the dirt and rocks in the pathway.  I turned on the fans to keep the dust moving out.  Using the blower was a major mistake as noted in the photo below.

 The lettuce plants were covered with dirt and some small pebbles.  I tried to blew them off, but that seemed somewhat stressful to the plants.  I then washed the with a gentle spray.  That left mud in the center of each plant as the above photo shows.

I began a major clean up in house six.  Above is row four which is about half way through the greenhouse.    Next week I hope to plant  a bunch of tomato plants.

A Cold Day in Holden

It was somewhat lonely home a lone.  Carol spent the night in the hospital.  After breakfast, I checked out houses two, three, and four.  Things looked pretty good.  It was cold with frost on the grass.  The chicks are doing well.

Robert, got a lot seeds from a co-worker at BYU.  I made labels for some of them that are listed above.  My intent was to plant them today, but didn't get it done.  

It was about time to visit Carol at the hospital.  I didn't want to got to late or I would have missed the doctor.  I was there till about eleven.  The doctor came and said that they could not find the cause of the infection that was causing the pain in her back.  An MRI was suggested.  

On the way home I bought some PVC piece to replace the stripped piece from yesterday.  I glued them together.

I use the pipe clamp to hold it ridged.  The screws go through the plywood and into a piece of 2x4 on the other side.

It is put together and is now time for the minute of proof.  I hooked a hose to the hose bib, turned the water on, and it leaked badly and there was only a little of water on the other end of the hose.  I thought that another pipe had broke and water was running away some where else.  Everything was okay.   I took it all apart to see what was plugging off the water.  A lot of pieces of PVC pipe went down the pipe.  When the water was turned on, the PVC dust plugged in the hose bib.  I got that out and still not enough water.  I found a seventy-foot hose and connected it to the hose bib.  There was plenty of water and no leaks.

My next project was to get the lawnmower working.  Yesterday, I got the crankcase oil adjusted right.  I put the air filter over the carburetor.  I tried to start it, but the battery was not good enough to get it started.  It almost did.  I put the battery charger on.  

I went back to Fillmore to visit with Carol.  Lisa was there.  Carol seemed to feel a lot better.  After a couple of hours we left.  Lisa and I ate at Cluffs.   There was a lot of people there.  I had a Bacon and Hambuger and fries. It was not that good.  I ate about half of It. was on for four or five hours. 

It was almost dark when I got home.  I removed the the charger.

The 24th July Between Greenhouse Work

Most of our work was in greenhouse six.  Robert, Jeanne, and Sadie spent the night with us.  He was up at day light and started to work.  The Holden Ward Celebrated July 24th with a parade lot food, pop bottle rockets, and ice cream.  We went home after the breakfast and began work in house six.  It was mostly pruning the tomato plants and cleaning out all the weeds.  In addition there were several totes filled with ripe tomatoes.  It was very hot and sweat was dripping off our faces.  There were some clouds.  I shout the west door and turned on the two fans.  That really made a difference in the temperature.  Robert and his family went home about five.  Below, Robert is pulling weeds, pruning all stems below the last fruit, and picking fruit.
