Wires for the Grapes

The are a lot of things that I wanted to accomplish today.  I watched half of the news this morning and went to work.

Paula Warner might come tomorrow and get these Fern Bushes.  They were in the orchard and I brought them to the patio where I could give them some water.

Alisha wanted me to spray the weeds and grass around here shrubs.  I the truck has some stuff in the bed that I needed to empty.  I got the house garbage and one trash can for house two and took it to the dump.  I can now put the tank sprayer in the truck and spray Alisha's weeds.

I was pruning off the side shoots of a special tomato plant that I growing.  There it is doing well and has four side shoots.  I cut one of them off.  The above photo doesn't show it clearly.  It is one the right side bottom.

She wanted some seeds of the trees that are in our yard.  She got some seeds from the Red Bud that is in front of our house.  Right now it is in full bloom.  We also got some seeds from the Hawthorne tree and Almond tree.

I pulled her two large Red Beets.  She wanted to plant some.  We filled this twelve inch pot with soil and the she planted some small beet plants and put and onion plant in the middle.

She planted the seeds in three different small pots.  I instructed her to water from the bottom.  She took a small Styrofoam container that was in the greenhouse.  She was here for nearly two hours.

We drove to Fillmore where I made a deposit and we got a few groceries.  For a treat we stopped at the Ice Burg and I got Carol a chocolate soft ice cream and I got me a vanilla cone.

I picked asparagus a little before lunch and got a nice batch.

I strung the wires for the grapes.  It took quite awhile.  I made several trips back to the garage and the greenhouses for tools.  The bottom wire was stiff and I could not get it tight.  I cut a piece of barbwire that was on the west fence.  I called Raymond and he gave me permission to use the wire.  You can't see it in the picture.  You can only see the bottom wire.  I pulled the barbed wire tight and wrapped it around the tee posts.  I got the turnbuckle that was in house six.  I tightened it up and that pulled the post a little bit, but caused the barbwire to sag.

I am going the sell most of the geraniums.  I took several pictures to show them on Holden Face book page.  The retail price at the Beaver Nursery for a smaller plant sells for $1.96.  I should be able to get more.  At least $2.75.

I made slug bait with yeast, sugar, salt, and water.  The strawberry plants are being eaten by slugs.  There are eight small cups of bait in the strawberries.  I put a couple of other cups by the pole beans.

Carol spotted some humming birds in the Red Bud tree.  It took awhile to find the bird feeder.  Carol filled it and I hung it on the roof over the front porch.

Rain and More Rain

We left home early this morning for the Manti Utah temple.  There were a few sprinkles all the way.  There were thunder storms most of the morning that we were there.  When we arrived at home around 2:30 this afternoon.  There were few rain showers on the way home.

I put out a bucket Sunday afternoon.  This afternoon it had 1 1/2 inches of water in it.

There was some flooding in the south west garden.  The water came through our neighbors property and washed soil and other debris into our garden.  It cause any damage.

We have melons and watermelons in that garden.  A lot of mud was splashed on the leaves.

Horse manure deposited in house two because of the flooding.

The was also some flooding in house one.

The heavy rain knocked off a lot of apples.

The grapes are beginning to dry.

I prepared the overhead wire for the twine and tomato clips.  Now the tomatoes are held up with bamboo stakes.

 I tied up the horizontal wire with the blue twine.  It is tied up to every bow.   It is barely visible.

I used the turnbuckle to tighten it.  The wire was broken from last year and I hooked the broken ends together.  I took me awhile tie them securely together.

There were a lot of weeds that were growing through a dip line.  I had a little extra time, so I dug them up.

The humming birds are migrating.  There were a dozen or more of them drinking the feeder.  It was almost empty.  Carol made a syrup and I put it in the feeder after dark.

Irrigating and More

I was up at the usual time.  I didn't have time to do any reading.  I went up to the main ditch and put the gate in and got the water coming.  There was a lot of grass growing, but the water made its way through it and was soon running on the back lawn.  I watered the garden first and watered the lawn west of the garage.  

 This scooter thing was in the west garden.  I brought it to house six where I was able to pull all the  weeds in a row of tomatoes while sitting.  I pushed along using my feet.  I did the weeding and checked several times how the irrigation was progressing.

 I turned the water down to Raymond, our neighbor, at two.  I then dug up the weeds on the south side of house six.  Most of it is grass.  Most of the seeds were ripe.  As soon as it gets wet, a new crop will spring up.

 There are a lot of grass and tumble weeds in house five.  They were quite easy dig up.  Some were growing on top of the weed barrier.  A little tug on them broke them loose.  They are piled down the center of the greenhouse.

While pulling the weeds, I saw this grasshopper caught in a spider web.  It was trying to get away.  I came back later and it was gone.

There were a lot of humming birds in the greenhouses and also in the yard.  One landed on the zinnias . I turned around to get a picture and it was gone.
