Saturday and Wood Working Shows

I walked out to the garden.  Deer have been walking through the garden.  I could see fresh tracks in the wet soil.

They some of the cabbage and broccoli plants.  I circled their location.

I put a large welded wire piece on top of four blocks which should offer some protection.

I dug out a lot of weeds and weedy shrub.

The irrigation water did not get on a high spot.  I put the hose there and turned on the water.  I forgot about it and it ran for nearly four hours.

The peonies were getting dry.  I started the water and it ran for the same amount of time.

I did a lot of weeding in the garden.  I hope to make a weed free area and then make it larger through out the summer.

Weeding, Killing, and Hanging

a lot to do today.  I was out working by eight this morning.

The peas are doing really well.  There are a lot of pods and a lot of blossoms.  We should be picking some by next week end.

There are a lot of starts from the poplar trees that are growing east and south of house six.  I cut off the tops which left little stumps just above the ground.  I painted round up on all of the stumps.

 The burpless cucumber plants are big and ready to be planted in the ground.  I pulled up most of the pea plants.  The above photo shows the stack of vines.  I pulled off the pods.  There are some in the white color bowl.   I took the vines out to the compost pile outside of the west door.

I needed more tomahooks and used some of the wire left in house six.

 This is the cucumber plant.  It is in good shape and does not need to be cut.

I planted them in the hoop tunnel where the peas used to be.  Some are eight inches apart and some are every six inches.

I sprayed three tanks of killed weeds in the ditch, out by the grapes, and in other arears around the garden.  I painted the grass in these geraniums with round up.  I didn't want to spray the geraniums.

The eggplants have a lot of weed.  On hands and knees I and pulled and hoed out the weeds.

I hung some of the smaller tomato plants.

I made a bag of vegetables for Ann and Raymond Stevens,

Lots of alums  and fox tail lilies in this garden North of the house and south of the road.

What I Didn't Know This Morning

I made a mental list of the things that I wanted to do today.  Fertilize and water the strawberries.  Plant Rainbow Carrots,  and prune and hang the tomatoes,  transplant peppers.

I fertilize the lawn and began the watering.  It took about three hours to water.  I moved the hose every thirty minutes.

Yesterday, one of our chickens was killed by a dog.  I took on the dump road and threw it over the fence in the tall wild rye.  I was pruning the tomatoes and every thirty minutes I would move the hose  I worked in house six most of the day.  It was hot but not so bad that I had to quit.

 I planted the rainbow carrots in this small raised bed.

This I did not plan.  Carol was at the raspberry patch.  She started to pull the creeping ??????.  She went back into the house and I started pulling the vines and pruned some roses and current bushes.

The raspberry patch looks much better.  The might be a nice picking.

I shredded all of the plant material.

Today I made hooks with screws and now I can hang shoves, pitchfork,  and hoes.   They have been hard to find because some are laying on the ground.

This post has two shovels and one hoe hanging.

At the end of the day I did some weeding in the strawberry patch.  I was going to kill it with round-up, but Carol thought differently.  Good thing I followed her council.

I watered most of the garden.  The plants are looking really good.

I didn't get a picture of the weeding I did in house six.  I want to plant the peppers on the north side of house six, but the weeds are to bad.  I dug up all the weeds and hopefully I can plant them Wednesday.

Dropping Tomato Plants

I worked most of the morning in house one.  I wanted to prune and drop tomato plants before it gets to hot.  I pruned most of the plants.  I dropped one row going north.  I started another going north.  There was one variety, about seven cherry tomato plants that were so big and the fruit small and not very many.  I simply pruned the and cut off the tops.  

The Sun Gold cherry tomato is in the photo above.  It grew so tall I tied it to the overhead wire in two places.  At the end of the blue line on the left is the growing terminal.  It is hooked again at the right end.

The tomato plants have been dropped to the right (east) in house six.  There was not room on the left (west) to drop them.

During the day I weeded in the west garden.  Watered the west lawn and plants in the west garden.

Irrigating and More

I was up at the usual time.  I didn't have time to do any reading.  I went up to the main ditch and put the gate in and got the water coming.  There was a lot of grass growing, but the water made its way through it and was soon running on the back lawn.  I watered the garden first and watered the lawn west of the garage.  

 This scooter thing was in the west garden.  I brought it to house six where I was able to pull all the  weeds in a row of tomatoes while sitting.  I pushed along using my feet.  I did the weeding and checked several times how the irrigation was progressing.

 I turned the water down to Raymond, our neighbor, at two.  I then dug up the weeds on the south side of house six.  Most of it is grass.  Most of the seeds were ripe.  As soon as it gets wet, a new crop will spring up.

 There are a lot of grass and tumble weeds in house five.  They were quite easy dig up.  Some were growing on top of the weed barrier.  A little tug on them broke them loose.  They are piled down the center of the greenhouse.

While pulling the weeds, I saw this grasshopper caught in a spider web.  It was trying to get away.  I came back later and it was gone.

There were a lot of humming birds in the greenhouses and also in the yard.  One landed on the zinnias . I turned around to get a picture and it was gone.

Planting, Fixing,& Weeding

After breakfast and news I began work in house two before it gets very hot. 

 Robert and Frank planted bunch onions sometime in January or February.  Some got transplanted and are sold.  I transplanted the rest of them this morning.

The next job was transplanting the Detroit Red Beets that have been growing in house three.  Those on the left were transplanted about three weeks ago.  I plant a tray every week with 105 cells.  I will also be transplanting every week.

There is some dill weed growing in the garden,  Carol harvested it.  I watered some that hadn't been watered all year.  It should flourish in a few weeks.

I pruned all of the tomato plants in house six.  I went to house one to prune.  The first tomato plant in row two was on the ground.  Hung it back up and found that all of the tomato plants in row two were on the ground.   Early this spring that wire was broken.  I splice the ends together by wrapping the two ends together.  The weight of the tomatoes pulled splice apart.  I wondered how I would be able to lift all the tomato plants back on top of the poles.  I pulled the wire out from both end.  I then hooked them together again by making one loop and then the second loop by going through the first one.  I the loosened a turnbuckle most of the way.  I hooked the turnbuckle to the eye screw and put the wire through the eye on the other end of the turnbuckle and pulled it tight.  Next I put the wire in the groves at the top of the post.  All I had to do after that is hang the tomato plants to the wire.

For lunch I had a bacon tomato meatloaf sandwich.  

I found some wasp and hornet poison.  It is supposed spray twenty feet.  It didn't spray ten feet.  The comments on the internet mainly said that it wasn't effective.

A couple of years ago I planted carrots in this raised bed.  I was low on soil.  I found soil and used potting soil and hauled it in the wheelbarrow.

Later I turned on the water and soaked it.

Several weeks ago I put tree basket upside down on the tomato plants.  I thought that most of the tomato plants were determinate, but seems that I was wrong.  I drove a seven foot half inch conduit into the ground through the center of the basket.  I made sort of a six inch umbrella on top and a spike that through the umbrella into the conduit.  That should hold the tomato plants upright.

We found squash bugs in our squash plants which we killed.  The was a large pumpkin vine which was killed by squash bugs.  I dug up the plant, stacked it in one place, and covered it with weed barrier.  I secured the edges,  The squash bugs in it cannot escape.  

I weeded in the southwest garden.  There was a Topaz melon a little bigger than a tennis ball.  I run water down the row and from my hands an knees I was able to pull up the weeds.

Mount Timpanogus Temple

We spent most of the day in American Fork at the Timpanogos  Temple.  We did sealings for Carol's  relative that passed on.

After our temple visit we gave them some of our garden produce in the temple parking lot..

 The pole beans are nearly ready to climb.

 I weeded all the Bristlecone pine plants.  The above photo shows a grassy weed which was in almost every cone-tainer.  I cut and pulled all the weeds.

This tray show a lot of weeds.  Mainly a grass and spotted spurge.

Two weed free trays of Bristlecone pine seedlings.  I took them up to pad one where they will get a good watering to early in the morning.

It was 4:30 when we got home.  The basil above had started wilt.  I watered everything.
