Topaz Melons

I closed the east doors to greenhouse five.  This morning after breakfast and the morning news, I opened the doors.

The latest tray of tomato and pepper seeds I planted were all droopy.  The soil was moist.  I watered them.  When I came back later, they were looking good again.

This the photo of what is left of the rubber rabbit bush that I took out yesterday.

I should have planted the Topaz melons a couple of weeks ago.  I just remembered them today.  I filled the tray with potting soil and poured water on it.  I pressed a shallow hole in each cell, then I put four seeds in each cell.  I don't know how well they will germinate.

I covered seeds with more potting soil and then pressed the soil down with the palm of my hand.

This afternoon I dug up a lot of weeds in the garden.  This is where I plant to plant watermelons.  In the above photo are a type of milk weed.  They have to be dug up by the roots.  They get quite tall, and the seeds blow around like dandelion seeds.  The photo shows the roots.

These two pots were in the garden where I was digging weeds.  We had geraniums in them last year.  I pulled out all of the old roots and put them on the edge of the driveway.

I trimmed of all the yellow flowers with my Weed eater to keep them from producing seeds.

Monday

After breakfast I put away all of the pipes.  Putting the three big pipes away was quite tiering.  I went into the house and rested some.  We drove to Fillmore for gasoline and a few groceries.  I worked in the garden.

I tied up the cucumbers again.  They grow fast and branch.

I thinned the peaches.  I had to get a small ladder to reach some of them.  I lost the picture of the other peach tree.

I pruned and tied up the tomato plants.  They are doing pretty good.

The Topaz melons are looking good..  They are branching and some have the male flowers.

Soaking Germination Trays

 I planted Topaz melons and Hale's Best cantaloupes.  I made a tube with a plywood bottom and 2x2 sides.  It was to small.

I did a lot of weeding again.  I dug up the carrot bed.  There were a lot of old carrots left over from last year.  I am cleaning it up for a new planting of carrots next week.

This is the tray soaking tub.  But as you can see a 1020 tray will not fit.  I worked on that most of the morning.  I got a chair to think of what to do.  At left of the chair, there was a 1020 tray that didn't have any holes in it.  I put water in it and then planted the Topaz melons on one end and the Hale's cantaloupe on the other end.  There would be thirty-six cells for each.  

Later this afternoon I spaded on each side of the front porch.  

Geraniums on each side.

I walked into house five.  The potato plants were super dry.  I watered them  and saw some small potatoes.  I  picked up four of them.

Carol's brother-in-law, Fred, passed away a couple of days ago.  Carol has been on the phone with her siblings today.

Planting, Fixing,& Weeding

After breakfast and news I began work in house two before it gets very hot. 

 Robert and Frank planted bunch onions sometime in January or February.  Some got transplanted and are sold.  I transplanted the rest of them this morning.

The next job was transplanting the Detroit Red Beets that have been growing in house three.  Those on the left were transplanted about three weeks ago.  I plant a tray every week with 105 cells.  I will also be transplanting every week.

There is some dill weed growing in the garden,  Carol harvested it.  I watered some that hadn't been watered all year.  It should flourish in a few weeks.

I pruned all of the tomato plants in house six.  I went to house one to prune.  The first tomato plant in row two was on the ground.  Hung it back up and found that all of the tomato plants in row two were on the ground.   Early this spring that wire was broken.  I splice the ends together by wrapping the two ends together.  The weight of the tomatoes pulled splice apart.  I wondered how I would be able to lift all the tomato plants back on top of the poles.  I pulled the wire out from both end.  I then hooked them together again by making one loop and then the second loop by going through the first one.  I the loosened a turnbuckle most of the way.  I hooked the turnbuckle to the eye screw and put the wire through the eye on the other end of the turnbuckle and pulled it tight.  Next I put the wire in the groves at the top of the post.  All I had to do after that is hang the tomato plants to the wire.

For lunch I had a bacon tomato meatloaf sandwich.  

I found some wasp and hornet poison.  It is supposed spray twenty feet.  It didn't spray ten feet.  The comments on the internet mainly said that it wasn't effective.

A couple of years ago I planted carrots in this raised bed.  I was low on soil.  I found soil and used potting soil and hauled it in the wheelbarrow.

Later I turned on the water and soaked it.

Several weeks ago I put tree basket upside down on the tomato plants.  I thought that most of the tomato plants were determinate, but seems that I was wrong.  I drove a seven foot half inch conduit into the ground through the center of the basket.  I made sort of a six inch umbrella on top and a spike that through the umbrella into the conduit.  That should hold the tomato plants upright.

We found squash bugs in our squash plants which we killed.  The was a large pumpkin vine which was killed by squash bugs.  I dug up the plant, stacked it in one place, and covered it with weed barrier.  I secured the edges,  The squash bugs in it cannot escape.  

I weeded in the southwest garden.  There was a Topaz melon a little bigger than a tennis ball.  I run water down the row and from my hands an knees I was able to pull up the weeds.

Picked tomatoes for Las Vegas Family

We were home after spending the morning at the Manti Utah temple about 2:30.   We picked cucumber, tomatoes, and peppers.  Robert and Frank came while we were picking.  Below is wat we picked.

 Robert and Frank did not stay long.  Robert had to get back to a barbeque.  They picked a few things and then took off.

I picked three Topaz melons.  The first one was too ripe.  The second one I gave to the Masner's, and the third one which was the best one, I put in the fridge to take to Las Vegas.  I weighed nearly seven pounds.

Started in house one - ended with tomato cages

I made five or six more hooks this morning.  I worked in house one most of the morning.  I used the hooks two hang tomato plants that were being held up by four foot bamboo stakes.  They were determinate tomato plants with some large tomatoes.  I will watch and see how they do.  Below is the twine and tomato clips.

Yesterday, I braced up the egg plants on the south end of house one.  Before lunch, I braced up the egg plants and pepper plants on the south end of house one.  Now they are braced all the way.  I drove some stakes in the ground and stretched the twine between the stakes.  Many of the plants are over three feet tall.

An interesting pepper.  

 Here is another version of a two basket tomato cage.  The difference is the adjustable height.

These pieces of wood have holes drilled at and angle.  The wood is the right size for driving it into the pipe for a tight fit.

A nail inserted into the hole.  Then the cage can be lowered or raised depending on the height of the tomato plant.

Below I drove in a screw which holds the cage in place.

I weeded about half of the onions yesterday and Carol finished it off this morning.  the weeds are on the left side of the row.
