Onions & Corn

Shower, Scriptures, Breakfast, & News as usual.  We grow to the Fillmore Market every Friday morning.  We were the first customers in the store.  By the time we finished our shopping there were more customers.  When we got home I went out to the garden.  The first thing was to plant the onions that I bought yesterday.

The tiller worked quite well.

The row of potatoes to the right which were planted over a month ago were starting to come up.  I watered them for the first time earlier this week.  I tilled  the row for the onions.  The tiller started right up when I slid the choke and pulled the crank rope.  I went up and back two times.

There were a couple of asparagus plants that had new shoots.  I picked all of the asparagus that was ready.  Carol prepared them for me for lunch.

I used a rake to pull out the soil which left a farrow.  I got me a chair to sit on.  I cut off most of onion tops.  I removed the rubber band which held the bunch together.  I pulled the onions apart.  With dibble I made a hole for each onions.  They were planted about three inches apart.

I inserted an onion in each hole.  I pressed the soil around the onion and tried to keep it fairly straight up.  The two bunches of onions took most of the row.

Not a good photo.  Carol finished the puzzle this morning.  After lunch we went out to the garden.

The sweet corn is ready to plant.  I made two more rows.  I planted the early corn half way up the rows and the later corn in the bottom half of the rows.

 This is a row before any water.  I made the hole with a garden trowel and Carol pulled the corn plant out of the six pack and put it near the hole.  Sometimes she would hand me the corn plant.

I did all of the trimming- before I did the mowing.   I was able to mow faster because the trimming was done.

Fillmore, Onions, & Strawberries

Carol needed to go to Fillmore to get some cash.  We went to The State Bank of Southern Utah.  I wanted to stop at the Fillmore Nursery for some onions.  While there I got the onions, bought some red Pontiac potatoes,  and eight ever bearing strawberries.

I had water running on the raised bed.  The water did not soak in.  I stirred it in, in preparation for planting strawberries and red beats.  

I pulled up all of the strawberry plants that I received and planted April ten.  They looked when they came and they are still looking dead.

Here is the whole bunch minus a few that I didn't find.  I prepared an email to the nursery where I bought the plants.  I was going to request a refund for plants and postage.  I talked to them earlier this week and they wanted pictures.  I got the pictures, but couldn't attach them to the email.  I guess I will try again.

Jessen told me that there was another broken pipe leaking.  The water was spraying through a hair line crack.  I fixed this one yesterday.  I didn't cut it low enough.  There was still a little crack.  

I cut it again a little lower.  I found another plug and put on an extension.  Later I turned the water back on.  No leaks.

I planted the strawberry plants and this tray of red beats.  I hooked a water breaker to the hose and watered these, radishes, carrots, and more red beats.

Several More Surpises

I put a plug in the broken piece of pipe yesterday.

I checked the plug and it seemed be pretty secure.    I walked out to the well and turn on the pump.  
I opened the gate valve and water begin to fill up the pipes.  I walked back to the garden and turned on water for the peas.  The water was flowing.

I didn't turn off this faucet and a large stream of water was running.  I shut it off and walked back to the well.

Everything looked good and the tank pressure was good.

The pipe at the head of the grape vines was broken and water was spraying all over.  It had a ball valve. It was easy to shut off the water.

After I shut off those faucets I figured that everything was going very well.  Jessen found me and said there was another broken pipe.   South of house six there was water spraying.  I shut off the water at the well.

I dug around the spot where water was running.  I took quite awhile.  I found the pipe and dug on all sides of it.  I then dug out more soil on the north side.  I got this board for a dry place to kneel.  I made several trips to the garage for tools.  I use a small garden trowel to remove soil that if couldn't get with the shovel.  I sawed off the broken piece with a small dove tail saw.  I glued on a piece of PVC pipe.  With a coupler on one end and a cap on the other end, I glued it all together.  

I back filled the soil around the pipe.

I found to ball valves in the hole that I dug.  One was too corroded so I threw that one away.  I was able to fix the other one.

Richard and Jessen are beginning to cut down this dead tree.  Richard is sawing and Jessen is pushing it to the north east.

 Carol and I went for a ride.  We drove to Salina, Utah, and filled the car with gas.  On the way we both guessed what the gas would cost.   My guess was $1.65 a gallon.  Carols guess was $1.85.  We
were both wrong.  It was $1.15 per gallon.  We each got a large ice cream cone and then drove around town for a while.  After we got home I turned on the pump.  Water was running.

I planted Blue Lake pole beans on the north side of the hoop house.  the water is running down the north row.  Before I planted the south side of the hoop house I had to slide the base of it to the north.

I moved it about ten inches.  The two arrows show it.  I then planted beans one the south side of the hoop.

My brother, Paul, called.  His son Jake has covid-19 and is really sick.  He is at home.

Surprise & Solution

There are a couple of before and after photos.  The top of each pair is yesterday, and the bottom is today.

Yesterday I took the photo of the broken pipe.

I went to Fillmore to get some PVC fitting to fix them.  I got the wrong part and wasn't able to fix it.  Instead of making another trip to Fillmore, I found some pieces and was able to plug it. The next trip to Fillmore I will get the right piece.

The ball valve broke.  I could have unscrewed it, but I cut the pipe below the valve thinking that the pipe froze and broke.

I found a valve in a nursery tub that had a lot of parts. I could have screwed it on but I cut it off.  There were a couple of adapters that worked that I glued together

Carol answered the phone. Dan Speakman was on the other end.  The new TV that I ordered last week.  I drove to Fillmore.  I got some glue, Teflon tape and the needed PVC piece.  It was the wrong size.  I then picked up the TV.  It was a little smaller than the one that we have.  Before I got out of town, I turned around and took it back.  He was good about it.  I offered to pay a restocking fee.  He didn't need that and he reversed the credit card charge.

The three foot stem that held the facet broke off.  I think that it was hit when some trees were cut down.  I watched a bunch of videos that showed how to remove the piece of PVC in the tee could be removed.  None were very practical in this situation.  During the night a solution came.  I would make a plug.

I mounted the lathe on my work bench.  I found a short piece of pine that I could turn to fit the pipe.  The left end will go into the pipe.  It took a lot of turning and removing it then test it against the broken piece.

I coated it with pipe cement and pounded it in.  I left it there and will turn the water on in the morning.

This photo is a couple days old.  There were still  a couple of low places on the edges that need more putty.  I put on some more;

Carol finished this puzzle last night.

I took Shane, Adam, and Dustin for a tour of our yard.  I showed them how the irrigation water it distributed throughout our yard and all of the sources for well water.  There are hose bibs all over our yard.
