Saturday & Sunday

We made arrangements with Carol's sister, Ann, who lives in Las Vegas, to meet her in St George on Sunday at twelve noon.  We missed church today,  But Sunday was the only day that Mike could get off work.  As soon as breakfast was finished I began picking the vegetables.  We went to the temple Saturday afternoon.

We had a lot of good peppers, bells, Anaheim, and jalapenos.   The bells were huge, the best peppers that we have ever grown.

The tomatoes have done well.  The above tomatoes are from Mortgage Lifter tomato plants.  They are large very little cracking.

I picked all of the ripe tomatoes.  I put them six nursery cans.  They would be much easier to put in the trunk than some of the boxes that I had.  We didn't put them in the trunk, but put four behind the drivers seat and the other two were put behind the passenger's seat.  The big cooler was full of peppers, cucumbers, and zucchini

We met Ann, her son, Mike, and his wife Cathey at the pavilion in back of the large chapel.  We were a block north of the St George Temple that is being remodeled.   I failed to get a picture from the south end.

We waited here for Ann and her family.  We didn't have to wait very long.  Some of us walked over to the church to use the rest room.  The vegetable were transferred to Mike's car.  We visited a while and then came home.  There were times going home, that the traffic was pretty heavy.  As we got closer to Holden the traffic was not as heavy.

There was a couple of chicken breast in the crock pot.  It was nearly finished when we go home.  Carol fried onions and shredded potatoes.  They were good.

Las Vegus Day Three

Last day in St. George.  We were up at 6:45.  I showered, read two chapters from the Book of Mormon, and then went down to the workout room.  I wanted to get on the treadmill, but there were two young people on it running at a high rate of speed.  The looked like they might have been together.  There was another person lifting hand weights.  I left and went back to the room.

It was about 7:30 when we went down for breakfast.  We got plates and filled them with different breakfast items.  We went to a table.  Miles and Nyleen came and set with us.  I went back several times for more food.

Miles and Nyleen took us to the church where the viewing of Karl Larsen was being held.  He is the wife of my cousin, Evelynn.  We were there for about forty-five minutes.  Some of my cousins and siblings were there.  Some I haven't seen for years.  Howard and Gordon Johnson, brothers were there in wheel chairs.

We stopped at the  Kolob National Park twenty miles south of Cedar City.  Miles went into the visitor center with his National Park pass.  We did not have to pay.  We drove to the top of the park making several stops going up.  There are a lot of red rocks and other colors.  The photos do not come close to the actual majesty, brightness, and colors.  Following are pictures of parts of the park.  These all have names and I don't remember them.

There were lots of ponderosa pine trees along the upper part of the drive.  These were located at our first stop.

At the end of the road I was going to take a picture of  Carol, Miles, and Nyleen.  I lined them up and was ready to get the picture when I was interrupted by two young BYU students.  One offered to take the picture.  Miles and Nyleen and Carol and me.

We drove onto Cedar City.  It was past time for lunch.  Deciding where to eat with a small group of people has always been a challenge.  No one wants to commit to a place to eat.  We came to a gas station that contained a Subway and Chinese food.  We decided to eat there.  We stopped at a Subway in St. George, and that is where Miles and Nyleen wanted to eat.  At first I thought that I would have the Chinese food.  I changed my mind.  I forgot a photo of us eating, but took the follow picture after everyone left.

When we got to Beaver, we stopped for ice cream at the cheese plant.  There were a lot of people.  The parking lot was filled with cars and inside the store was filled with customers.  On the door there was a big sign that said: STOMP THE WILD CATS.   My first impression was there many feral cats hanging around the cheese plant trying to get something to eat.  Further examination gave a much different meaning.  Beaver High School had beat Delta High School the week before in the quarter finals and next week they were going to play football with the "Wild Cats."  Whoever they are.  We went in and got some cheese and ice cream cones.  There was an older couple there in Sunday clothes.  We visited with them while waiting for our turn at the ice cream bar. They had just returned from a funeral and had also been ordnance workers at the St George temple.  We ate most of our ice cream setting on a bench by the door.

I took this photo because of the small stool.  I thought that I might design something similar as I have made some stools.

On the way home we stopped at the Maverick  in Fillmore to get gas.  I paid for the gas. They had the cheapest gas that we have seen in our trip.

When we got home, Miles gave me a haircut.  I vacuumed the kitchen floor to remove the hair.

I walked out to the greenhouses to determine conditions there since we have been gone for two days.  The last planting that I did is doing well.  I planted them last week, Wednesday.

Las Vegas Day One

As soon as it was getting light, we had breakfast and then I began to get things ready for our trip to Las Vegas.  I emptied the totes.  There were five totes plus one that was full of tomatoes and peppers.  I picked the tomatoes and peppers yesterday.

I checked on the lone hen and let her out.  The water pipe and water were frozen.  My first thought was that I blew out the lines yesterday and forgot to blow the one that watered our chickens.  Then I remembered that I had turned off the pump.  I then turned on the city water.  I adjusted it to a trickle.  That solved the water problem for the chickens.

I then went out to the greenhouses to see how things were.  House two was warm indicating that the furnace was working. I watered everything in house two.  The water pipe in house three was not froze but the hose was. 

I drug the hose and watered in house three.  It didn't reach in very far but I was able to reach all of the tubes with the hose bib turned on all the way.  Then watered those plants in the isle.

It was different in house five.  The both the pipe and hose was frozen.  I filled a five gallon with about two gallons of hot water from the house.  Then back to house five where I slowly poured the hot water on the pipe and hose bib.  With a channel lock plyers, I removed the hose.  I continued pouring the water and finally the water began to flow.  The pipe did not break.

Soon after that Miles and Nyleen came.  We loaded the suite case and totes in the back of Mile's car.  We were on our way to Las Vegas.  We stopped a the rest stop on the way.  The weather was cool, but not to bad.  Carol and Nyleen are pictured below.

We stopped at the new Cedar City Temple which is open to the public prier to the dedication.  We walked through or past all the rooms. Carol and I rode up and then down the elevators.  The baptistery was impressive as well as the celestial room.  The tour lasted about one and a half hours.    It was crowded, but a beautiful temple. 

We drove on to St George where we traveled all over the city looking submarine sandwich shop where we could eat.  The Google search led us to a place that was empty.  We picked another one and quickly found it.  We ordered a flat bread sandwich and cut it in half.  Nyleen, Miles and Carol are in the photo.

Next we went to the Hyatt Place.  Nyleen daughter Debby, a travel agent, booked it for us.  We followed the directions on Google search.  Miles and I went in to get registered.  We are on the third floor with a bed, fridge, big screen TV and internet hook up to my laptop.

We stopped at the St George Temple.  I took the picture below. Miles, Nyleen, and Carol are in the photo below in front of the temple.  We then went into the visitor center.  The missionary there was related to Venez Johnson.  We watched to movies about Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon.  They were well done and inspiring.

Flowering kale, flowering cabbage, pansies, and snapdragons add beauty to the grounds.

It was dark when we got out of the visitor center.  We drove around the city looking for a place to eat,  We ended up at the Chuck-o-Rama where I ate quite a bunch of food.
