Tractor Runs

I washed these dalhias yesterday and put them in house five for the night..

This morning I cut off the short stems.  One stem for the purple dahlias was left.  That root was a little redish.

I cut apart the pallet and saved the 3/4 pieces.  Two of the long pieces I left.  I might be able to save them later.  It is hard to pull out the nails.

I found one more Topaz melon in the garden.

I cut it open and cleaned out the seeds.  I cut one half in half again.  It was really sweet.  I ate the other half this evening.

There was a small watermelon half in the fridge.  It had been in there for nearly two weeks.  I ate a little bit, but quit,  It didn't taste good.  I through it away in the garden.

I couldn't get the tractor started yesterday.  I charged it for over an hour, but still would start.  I drove to Fillmore and bought a new battery.

I put all of the dahlia tubers in this number 15 nursery can.  I put the tubers in and them added some soil.  I shuck the pot and put in more dahlias.  I got them all in.   I couldn't hardly lift it on to the cart.

I put it in garage for the winter.  I will prune some of the tubers and plant them back in the garden in the spring.

The tractor still would start.  I tightened one of the battery cables and I was able to start it.  I drove it to the north end of house three.  I wanted to take out the old walker lawn mower.  The tires were flat and rotted.  I powered up the compressor.  The air would stay in the tire.

Winterizing Dahlias

 The sun was shining on the dahlias this morning when I went dig them up.  I dug up four, but the ground was so hard that some of the tubers broke and I cut off some some tubers.

What do you do when the ground is hard?  You pour on the water.  I used a small sprinkling water can.  I should have watered them one more time before we turned off the well.  It looked as if I would have to pour on the water the rest of the day.

 I told Carol of the difficulty of digging and would cover them with straw.  I decided not to but decided to cover them with leaves.  I raked some leaves and then began to blow them into a pile.  That worked really well.  I put them on a square of burlap and then dumped them on the dahlias.  I did this several times.  I got the lawnmower and mowed up the on the front and east lawn.  By the time I finished the dahlias we covered deep with leaves.

We were told to trim the trees around the power line that services the greenhouses.  Shane borrowed my electric chain saw and had one of his helpers did the pruning.  The above photo shows cut off branches and the power line.  

I pulled most of the Blue Lake pole bean vines of the tunnel trellis.  A heavy snow would crush the hoops.

I removed the trellis pipes and put them away.

Under the Kitchen Sink

The first thing after breakfast and some of the news, I picked a nice bunch of asparagus, cleaned it up and put it in the fridge.

A couple of days ago I looked at the dahlias and some of them had new stem buds.  The above photo shows about six of them.

I dug holes and planted them.  I made some small sticks to show the locations of them.  I later watered them.

Carol had a small job for me.   She wanted me to clean under the sink.  The space under the sink was really bad.  Three or four years ago the water was leaking from the tap above.  I didn't know where it was leaking.  I fixed the leak and things dried up.  This morning remove all of the soaps, sponges, show polishing material.   I found some contact paper that I am sure that it was over thirty years old.  It had a marble pattern.  The photo shows the pattern.   I worked on it for over two hours.  I had enough time before lunch to spray on tank of weed killer.

While I was digging holes for the dahlias, I found asparagus plants in the same bed.  I dug them and transplanted with our other asparagus  plants.

The flowering pear is extremely beautiful today.  Flowers all over the place.

 I took the other cattle panel and put it next the other bows.  There will be four bows to gather for the growing of our pole beans.

The last thing was the same as the first thing of the day.  There was another nice bunch of asparagus cuttings.  We are have family with us on Easter Sunday.  It will be served for dinner.

Home at One

I had a good day at the temple and I was home little after one.  While I was at the temple Carol made a lot of phone calls trying to get the results of EKG.  She got the run around and finally was able to get an appointment with a cardiologist.

I turned on the pump at our well.  After awhile I turned the water for the chickens.  I put a short piece of PVC pipe over the end of the hose which allows water to run into the pan without splashing.

There are weeds between the peas and the onions.  I got some of them yesterday and the rest today.  I also dug the weeds on the south side of the onions.

I turned on the water to the flowers west of the driveway.  I planted the rest of dahlias.   I dug up a lot of phlox to make room for the dahlias.

 The above tomatoes have been growing well in the greenhouse.  I brought them out to harden them off.  These will be planted in the garden next week.

Our cat, Tiger, comes and goes.  Today, he come up to the house to eat.  He then spent a couple hours on the chair and he was on the garage roof for some time.

Surprise Visiter From Provo

This morning as soon as breakfast was over and I had watched some of the morning news, we, Carol and I, pulled all of geraniums and a few other plants in the kidney.  We put them on the tarp.  We also pulled the volunteer flowers that in the gravel next to the lawn.  I pulled them over to the new compost pile.  It is getting pretty big.

A sprinkler had run all night on the dahlias. The flower bed was really wet and muddy.    I planned to dig them this afternoon, but decided to do it this morning.  The ground was muddy and soft and it was easy push the shovel into the ground.  I dug all around the dahlia far enough away so not to cut through a tuber.  I then pried back on the shovel at several locations and pulled the dahlia plant out of the ground.  I grabbed it by the stem.  I cut the stems of yesterday and cut too short.  That made it hard to hang on and hard to find some of them.  I dug all of the dahlias in the same way. I dug the rest of them in less time than I dug one yesterday.  Some had a lot of mud clinging to them and others there was not to much mud.  The photo below shows the muddy dahlias and where they came from.  There are three drip lines visible.

I moved them over to the lawn close to a garden hose and a spray nozzle. It took me awhile to get mud off all of them.  The photo below shows them pretty well cleaned up.

I had several ideas about a container to put them in.  I used a large nursery can.

I stopped for lunch and a little relaxation surfing the internet.  The doorbell rang.  Carol went to the door and there stood Frank Williams.  He brought with him a bail of potting soil and some thirty bare root bush clematis.  He wanted to put them in containers.  I thought a two gallon nursery can would be good, then after a second thought decided to use a one gallon can.  It would take a lot less soil.  We worked on that for about an hour.

Where should we put them.  In a cold frame, some where out side.  We decided to put them in house five.  There is no poly on it and a smooth surface.  That is were we put them.  I wanted to have some potting soil that covered the pots up two the top edge of the pot.  I filled the wheelbarrow with two loads of recycled potting soil.  When they were pretty well covered, I a put sprinkler on them and  turned it on for the night.

Frank and I had a discussion on what and how we should proceed next year.  I won't go into detail.  We discussed

• What to grow
• How much to grow
• How to sell what we grow.

Frank picked peppers and tomatoes that he took home.  He may be back some time next week.

The red beets and radishes in the north bed are germinating well.  The seeds that I planted in 1206 tray are beginning to germinate.

Trip up North

we got a lot done on the trip to Utah County.

We bought a few things at Walmart in Payson.  East of the  Walmart is a payless shoe store.  I bought a pair of slip on shoes with out laces.  I also bought a never wet spray can and gave it three coat when we got home. It helped.

We bought a few things at Sam's Club.  From there we drove to Target where I wanted to look at some cell phones.  The sales rep was not to be there until one.  We waited thirty minutes until he came.  He wasn't much help.  We then drove to  to gas up and get some work gloves.

We then drove home.

This evening we planted some dahlias that Robert brought.  We planted them west of our driveway.

We also planted some Wave Petunias west of the driveway close to the garage.

Lastly I cleaned the air filters on the lawn mower.  It seemed to help the engine run better.
