What Was I Thinking

Had breakfast and watched some of the news.  Carol has an appointment with Dr. Gross at 10:15 this morning.  I paid a few bills on line and prepared a deposit.  I couldn't start my weed eater so in put it in the car would not forget it.  We then drove to Fillmore for her appointment.  She went into the Dr.'s office I then left to take care of my business.  The first stop was at Penny's to have my weed eater fixed.  He was with another customer so I had to wait for ten to fifteen minutes.  He took it and gave the rope one pull and it started right up.  Several times earlier I pult the crank rope until my arm was tired and it would not start

There is and off on switch which is always in the on position.  To stop it, you push the switch to the off position and the engine stops.  I think that sometimes it sticks to the off position.  He made a few adjustments and was working really well.

I then went to the credit union where I made a deposit.  The next stop was at Zion's Bank where I made an interest and principle payment.  I then went back to the Dr.'s office.  Carol was still waiting. It was after eleven after she had seen the doctor.  We then went the market for some groceries and then to the Service Drugstore for some medication.  She also bought some birthday cards.  We then came home.  After a quick lunch. I shredded more papers.

My shredder was nearly full.  I shredded a few other papers and put them around some tomato plants that I planted a couple of days ago.  It is my desire that the weeds will not grow through the layer of shreds.

While I was waiting I read from the Better Home and Garden magazine.  There were some recipies using rhubarb.   I took a picture, but it is not legible.

I also took a picture of this small side table.  I have a lot of tile pieces that I could use if I made a similar table.

I got the weed eater going and cut the weeds along the road south of the street from the east to the west.

The copper rose on the west side of our yard looks and smells good.

I started to dig a lot of weeds.  I was not able to spray them because if has been so wet all of the time.

There were some shrubs and a dead elderberry bush that I needed to remove.  The almond tree had several dead limbs that was in my way.  I cut two honey suckle shrubs at ground level and painted the cut edges with round-up. I also cut down wild rose bush.  I brought over the shredder pointed in the west direction.  I turned on the ignition switch and pulled the crank rope and it started on the first pull.

Late this evening I planted a bunch of eggplants in house six.  The photo is somewhat clouded.  I don't know why.

Planting to Shredding to Mission Letters

I have been shredding old papers.  I dumped the shredder bin on a compost pile.  Walking out there I saw our cat midnight.  He has been sick for a month.  It looked like he was feeling better.  We haven't seen him for a couple of days.  This morning I saw him laying in the garden on top of a strip of weed barrier.

I wanted to put him in bag and dump him in the dumpster.  Carol said no to that.  I dug a hole in the backyard.

I let the chickens out.  They stayed close to the chicken run and were in and out most of the day.  They were all inside in mid morning.  I looked them in.

I put this furnace filter in, on October 22 of last year.  I put a new one in this morning.  While I was under the house,  I brought a lot of old papers that were in a box down there.  And shredded all of them.

I planted Burpee Big Boy tomato seeds and some Lemon Boy tomato seeds.  I had two packs of Big Boy with ten seeds in each pack; so twenty seeds planted.  There were thirty one Yellow Lemon seeds.  Between I planted sweet bell pepper seeds.

 I replaced the beer in tow of the little cups.  This one has a bunch of dead liltel slugs.

The base of this pedestal was two wide.  I cut about three quarter of an inch on each side.  It looks much better now.

I dumped the slugs on top of the soil.  You can see most of them at the bottom of the picture.

One of the drip lines broke and was spraying water.  I cut out the part that was broken and put in a coupler.  I came apart again when I turned on the water.  I shut it off again.  This time I got a vice grip and a pair of plyers and tightened it up.  It didn't even drip when I turned it back on.

The drip line broke in another place.  I patched it the same way as I did on the previous one.

The water is on and it is not leaking any water.

While under the house I found some letters that were addressed to me while I was on my mission nearly sixty years ago.  This folder with pages of all kind of different flowers and vegetables.  I took them out of the plastic envelops and replaced with the letters.  Then envelope with four cent stamps is put in with the letter.  They are in the loose leaf book in chronological order.  Generally speaking there is one for every week through the last half of 1959.  I came home from my mission early in February of 1960.  There are more letters that will cover eighteen more months.  I will be looking for them.

Pedestal, Slugs

We went for a ride late this afternoon.  We drove through Holden and then drove to Fillmore.  We got ice cream cones at the Iceberg.  Carol got chocolate and I had a vanilla cone.  We then drove up and down some streets in Fillmore.  Lot of dirty looking snow.

There were years of time cards, credit card receipts and carbon copies of old checks.  Some were ten years old.  I shredded all of them.  In the photo above is a time card setting on the shredder.

The sticky cards I put out a few days ago are loaded with various insects.  I put out a new one by the bell peppers.  Late this afternoon it was covered with insects.  Most of the are flying aphids.

I checked the all of the beer containers.  The one on the south end of the raised bed which has not attracted and slugs for a while had two large ones.   The fork is for size comparison.

I pulled a nice bunch of radishes.  A couple of them had been nibbled by slugs. I gave the tops to the chickens.

I removed the roots and  washed them.

I cut them into small pieces.

And made a salad with radishes, and egg, raisons, sunflower seeds, and peas from last summer garden.  It took awhile, but I ate it all.

I dug up the soil on the north end of the raised bed; smoothed it off; preparing it for more planting.  I pushed the PVC pipe in the soil and made three rows.

I planted radishes, Detroit Red Beets, and new carrot seeds.  Row one are radishes, rows two are beets and the wide row three are Scarlet Nantes.

I planted a tray of Early Wonder Tall Top beets.  The tray has 105 cells.  These are for beet greens.

I started a pedastol in the garage last week.  I hoped to finish it today, but didn't make it.  The picture above is one of the steps in the progress.  The large clamp is holding the stem/stand to small braces.

Above is the base with the braces.  I glued the brace and stem to the base.  There is a weight on top to hold it tight until the glue set.  After supper I went out to the garage to drive some screws through the bottom of the base up into the braces.  When I picked it up the glue had not cured and the base fell off.  I put it back together and will finish it in the morning.

Stool and Shredder

I was anxious as soon as it was light this morning to go out to house two to see how many mice I had caught.  I didn't catch any.  The four traps I set out last night caught nothing.

The bait was missing on one trap, but I think that ants ate it.  I did some transplanting which kept me busy for about an hour.  The phone rang.  It was Carol.  There was a package at the front door.

The planer was in this box.

It was the paper shredder.  I took it out of the box.  I opened the door and could not remove then bin.  It was stuck.  I called the shredder company, and the lady that answered suggested three things.  The last one was to hand into the bin and push it out.  It worked.

Most of the cucumber plants have and the rest will soon be dead.

I moved the last Cherry Banana tomato plant from the little pot to the larger pot which is the front pot in the above photo.

I cleaned the four spray tanks.  The plan is to use organic insect killers for insects, snails, and slugs.

This afternoon I began work on another stool.  I ripped two twenty-seven inch 2x4's into four 2x2's.

I smoothed the sharp edges of each leg with a router to have a more finished look.  I sanded the legs.  They look pretty good.

I glued the top onto the legs by turning everything upside down.  I marked the location of the rails and applied glue.  A weight on the rails held it together until the glue had cured.

I screwed the top to the rails.  The top was to large.  I ripped of a little from each edge at the table saw.

Not Much Today

Worked in the small shredder table about one hour.  The legs are nearly finished.  I drove a screw in a leg into the rail.  The screw was to close to the edge of the leg and split part of the rail.  I put some glue on it and clamped it.  It will be there all night and hope to have it finished tomorrow.

One of the headlights on our car burned out this morning while driving to the temple.  I made an appointment at Dearden's to have it fixed, but I believe that I will be able to fixt it.

Sweet Corn is Growing

We drove to Fillmore for groceries and to deposit a CSA check.

This is how my workbench looked this morning.

This is how it looked when I stopped working in the garage.  I am making a small table for the shredder.  I designed it to be built the same way as our antique milk safe.  It didn't work out that way.  I made mistake after mistake.  I made screw holes in the wrong place.  I screwed and glued the rails in the wrong place.  I had to take them apart.  As I left the garage, I finally got it figured out.

I did some serious cleaning in house two.  The above bench is ready for more plants.

I dug up a large beet last week.  It was in the house on top of the counter.  I cooked a little bit of it and it was pretty tough.  I planted back in house two, but in a raised bed.  I am hopping it will grow leaves and stems for harvesting.

I raked some leaves Saturday morning.

Here is a kohlrabi that was old and tough.  I gave it two the chickens.  They ate the leaves and the tender kohlrabi pups.

We have frequent visits by deer.  The lay down and watch me everywhere I go.

Deer in our yard Saturday morning.  I can walk around the yard and they just watch me.  If I walk towards them they get up and move.

I shredded a lot of papers this morning.  The shredder gets plugged up and I discovered over a couple of days, that if I pushed the button two have it run backwards, I can shred a lot of papers without it plugging.

The sweet corn is tasseling, there are some ears showing are barely showing, but the silk is along way off.
