Pedestal is Finished

I glued the top of the pedestal last night and this morning it was not a smooth glue job.   I cut down the middle which went through the glue joint.  I then glued it back together.

The pedestal stem had a bad spot because of the router.   I applied some glue and held it together with this short speed clamp.

The strawberry bed doesn't look good.  I removed the cover and watered some.  It looks like all of the plants are dead.  I think they were dead when I got them.

The radishes are growing well.  I transplanted a red beet in a spot in the corner.

I seeded the red beets here and there will be a good crop.  The welded wire is in place to keep the chickens from scratching in the raised bed.

I uncovered the peas.  there should be a lot of them.

I brought the two trays of sweet corn to the patio.  It is ready to be transplanted.  It is hear to be hardened of before I plant them early next week.

I got some Gladiator tomato seeds and planted them.  I soaked the six packs in a tray of water.

The package said twenty-five seeds, I planted twenty-nine.  The cells of one six pack had one empty cell.

I covered the seeds with vermiculite and soaked them in the pan of water.

The six packs are setting on a water proof heating pad.  I hope the germinate a lot fast than those in house five.

Here the pedestal is finished.  I glued the stem to the base and came back a couple hours later and turned it upside down and drove in some brads with my brad nailer .

Working on Pedestal

I was anxious to see how well the putty set up during the night

Yesterday I puttied the holes and cracks on the top of this stool.

This morning after morning chores I sanded the putty.  It worked pretty good.

I put on more putty to fill in the places that were a little low.  I will sand it some more tomorrow.  

I have been calling it putty all of the time, but it is Elmer's Wood Filler.  It was almost like new when I opened up the container.

I also put putty on over the screws that held the rails to the legs.

Carol started this puzzle a couple of days ago.  She finished it this morning.

I pollenated this pomegranate with a cue tip.  It is right in the front of the bush.

Last night I glued two boards together to make the base of the pedestal.  When I checked it this morning one edge was a little higher than the other edge.  I cut it apart at the glue joint.  The two sides fit much better.  I put down some wax paper.  It keeps the wood from gluing to the work bench. I glued it together again.  I did some other things in the yard.  When I came back some time later I trimmed it just a little larger.  The saw blade that I was using doesn't make a smooth cut because of all the screws that I have cut into.  I took off the blade and put in another blade that has over twice the number of teeth.  It makes a very smooth cut.

I cut four small pieces and glued each to the four corners.  I used my brad nailer to hold them together while the glue set.  I did the final trimming which gave all of it a smooth edge.  Next I chamfered the edges.

I routed the stem of the pedestal.  Three sides went well, but the router split some of the wood near the top.  I glued it to the stem and used this small clamp to hold the splintered pieces until the glue is cured.  

I glued these two boards together at the edge.  It looks like what is called a book mark.
But one side was cut away from the top of the other side.

Pedestal, Slugs

We went for a ride late this afternoon.  We drove through Holden and then drove to Fillmore.  We got ice cream cones at the Iceberg.  Carol got chocolate and I had a vanilla cone.  We then drove up and down some streets in Fillmore.  Lot of dirty looking snow.

There were years of time cards, credit card receipts and carbon copies of old checks.  Some were ten years old.  I shredded all of them.  In the photo above is a time card setting on the shredder.

The sticky cards I put out a few days ago are loaded with various insects.  I put out a new one by the bell peppers.  Late this afternoon it was covered with insects.  Most of the are flying aphids.

I checked the all of the beer containers.  The one on the south end of the raised bed which has not attracted and slugs for a while had two large ones.   The fork is for size comparison.

I pulled a nice bunch of radishes.  A couple of them had been nibbled by slugs. I gave the tops to the chickens.

I removed the roots and  washed them.

I cut them into small pieces.

And made a salad with radishes, and egg, raisons, sunflower seeds, and peas from last summer garden.  It took awhile, but I ate it all.

I dug up the soil on the north end of the raised bed; smoothed it off; preparing it for more planting.  I pushed the PVC pipe in the soil and made three rows.

I planted radishes, Detroit Red Beets, and new carrot seeds.  Row one are radishes, rows two are beets and the wide row three are Scarlet Nantes.

I planted a tray of Early Wonder Tall Top beets.  The tray has 105 cells.  These are for beet greens.

I started a pedastol in the garage last week.  I hoped to finish it today, but didn't make it.  The picture above is one of the steps in the progress.  The large clamp is holding the stem/stand to small braces.

Above is the base with the braces.  I glued the brace and stem to the base.  There is a weight on top to hold it tight until the glue set.  After supper I went out to the garage to drive some screws through the bottom of the base up into the braces.  When I picked it up the glue had not cured and the base fell off.  I put it back together and will finish it in the morning.

Pedastol, Planting, & Transplanting

This morning the driveway and ground are wet and frozen which didn't take long to thaw.  I worked in greenhouse two and in the garage.

I transplanted the rest of the leeks and started transplanting celery.  The leeks are in the front and the celery is in the back of the above tray.  I also planted Italian Large Leaf basil and Slow Bolt Cilantro.

I picked radishes and some of them were severly split.  Others were slightly cracked and showed rodent or slug damage.  

I picked two bunches of Italian Parsley and a bunch of radishes.

I dug two leeks and cleaned them up.

In the garage I resumed work on the pedestal.   Yesterday, I made the top of the pedestal.  Today, I worked on the base.  I cut the pieces and glued them together.  I put plastic wrap on the table saw so the glue would not stick to the saw.  I put the clamps and lightly tightened them.  I then plastic wrap over the clamps.  Two short boards were put on the base so as to be between the two clamps.  Heavy weights were put on the two boards to prevent the base from bowing up.

I made two CSA boxes of vegetables.  They contained Italian parsley, a small bag of radishes, two onions.  One had a cucumber.  They weren't in a box, but were in plastic grocery bags.  I gave one to the Masner's and the other one to the Remkes's.

Cleaned the Kitchen Window

After breakfast, Carol asked me to wash some of the glass in the kitchen window.  I have learned that it is best to comply with her request, instead of putting it off.  I washed the two bottom panes and then washed them from the outside.  I removed everything from the window sill.  Dead millers were all over the sill.  There were dead spiders and dead wasps.  I vacuumed up the bugs and the dust.  With a damp rag I cleaned most of the dirt.

The items in the window were very dusty.  I dusted them off with a damp rag.  As I did that I put them back in the window.  There were a couple of things that I threw away.  The black tube from the vacuum is in the bottom corner on the left.  That took me a couple of hours.

 I continued work on the pedestal.  I made four braces to help hold the pedestal up right.  I needed my jig saw to round of the top of the braces.  A short in the in the jig saw cord tripped the breakers in the switch box.   It took me quite awhile to get it repaired.  The cord is about six inches shorter.  I had to replace the blade and was quite a challenge.   The wood was over an inch thick, and the saw would not cut it through it.  I moved over two the table saw and quickly made the rounded top.

The bird feeder was nearly empty.  The peanuts blocked the bottom feeders.  I dumped the bird feeder and removed all the peanuts an put them on the dish or the bottom of the feeder.  Two of our cats were eating the peanuts.  I thought this to be strange,

I then filled the bird feeder and hung it in the tree.  It doesn't take long for the birds to find it.  Often the cats are laying under the bird feeder.

The photo below shows the pedestal and two of the side braces.   It is not glued to the base at the point.  The braces are glued to the pedestal.  The top is sitting to the right.

I wanted to round the edges on the base and the top.  I haven't used the router for a long time.  I could not get the bit out.  I took the black top off.  Still I couldn't get the bit out.  After loosening and tightening the chuck if that is what it is called.  I used a punch to remove it.  I put it back together and put another bit in.  I rounded part of one of the edges and it looked terrible.  I found another bit and it worked ok.  There was one edge on the base and an edge on the top that looked pretty bad.  On the table saw I cut a little bit of each.  I routed again and now it looks good.

I sanded the base and the tops and the braces and the pedestal.  It is now ready for staining and finish.

Pine Nuts and Jade Plant

We were home from the Manti Utah Temple early this afternoon.

Yesterday I began working on a pedestal.  Below is the one that is in the house.  I will copy it with a few changes.

I sanded the base and the top.  I used a clamp to hold down one corner.  I then sanded with the belt sander.  Instead of the clamp on the piece being sanded I clamped a small board to the bench top.  The piece will push against the board.  I can change it end for end and put the small piece there without having to re-clamp it.

I glued small wooden pads on the bottom of the base.  Three of them did not match the grain of the wood.  I took them off and glue them back so the grain matched.  Tomorrow I will stain or pain it, if I have time.

We haven't had rain for over a month and the lawns is pretty dry.  We always water the lawn with well water.  I drained the pipes last week.  To water, I hooked the hose to city water in house three.  It has run in two different places on the front lawn.  I turned it way down for the night so it wouldn't freeze.

There is water running at two different places for the hen.  One is in the water dish and the other running in the chicken run.  It getting pretty muddy.  I hooked a short hose to that hose bib and run the water two the west edge.

Last week I bought a pound of pinion pine nuts.  I planted them in the germination trays late afternoon.  I watered them well and will put them in house three in a couple of weeks.

A couple of weeks ago Carol's plant,  Crassula ovata, commonly known as jade plant tipped over into the sink.  Two branches broke off,  I cut off the leaves and will let the scab up some and put them in pots in a week or so.   There were twenty-three stems.
