Seventh Day

It has been seven days since our son, Eric Leslie Johnson passed away.  We have had a week of sadness.  I wrote about something about during the past week.  Yesterday, we received a card from Mark Stephenson and his wife.  We received many comments on Face Book expressing sorrow and condolences.  We attended our church meetings.  There were a few expressed their sorrow.   And there were many more did not know.

We came home for our Sunday dinner.  Most of it was prepared this morning before going to church.  The phone has rang many times today.  Clara Stevens brought a loaf of homemade bread.  Bishop Gates stopped by on his way home express his condolences.  We visited for about twenty minutes and he blessed our home and family in a beautiful prayer.

Ray and Mary Anne, my brother and sister in-law, visited a while.  We shared family memories. Richard, our oldest son, called and expressed his concerns for April.

One thing is certain.  I know that there is a God and His son, Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world.  By keeping his commandments we can enter into his Kingdom.  I know that saving priesthood ordnances were restored by The prophet Joseph Smith and those that succeed him.

Photo & Miter Stand

Quite a morning.  After breakfast and during the news I spent some time on face book.  There was a picture of our nine month old granddaughter.  She is the daughter of Maison and Dalston Wells.

Carol wanted a picture Reese Wells to hang on the fridge with some of our other grandkids and great grandkids..  I worked on that for two hours trying to print the photo.   I could copy the photo, but when I wanted to print it, I could not find the then folder where the file was placed.  I put it in several other folder.  Finally I found it, but the printer would not work.  I messed around with the printer and it eventually it was printed.

The above photo shows where I finished with my miter saw stand.  There are two pieces of plywood to support the wood while being cut.  One on the left and one on the right.  The were at an angle and it was hard to make them level with the face of the saw.

I was thinking about it during the early morning while lying in bed.  I cut a short 2x4 and attached a narrow piece plywood to the flat edge of the 2x4.  I drilled a hole at each end of the plywood which I could then screw it to the top of the miter table.

I also put a piece of plywood under the miter saw.  There is a short leg of foot on the front of the saw at each end.   I put lag screw and washer and screwed it into the table.  I had to carefully trim the 2x4's so they would be the same height of the saw face.  I did it several times, just a little bit at a time.

I still had some time before i needed to go in the house.  I removed some of the junk.  I took three boxes of wood over to my neighbor, Carl Remkes.  He uses them to heat his shop during the winter..  I used a scraper to clean up the garage floor which is covered with dust and saw dust.

I got out my shop vacuum and cleaned the floor.  I should have blown the dust off all of the bench tops.  That will be another time.  I dumped the tank on the garden blew the dust off the filter.

Miter Saw Stand

A couple of days ago, I found some family history written by my dad's brothers and sisters;  I looked all morning for the files on my lap top.  I have looked before and scrolled through all the files.  I did it again this morning.  I looked one more time this morning and slowly scrolled.  I found it.  The name of the file was "scanned."  I printed the one written by my aunt Mary Johnson.  It was eight pages long.

I then started on the miter saw stand,  Yesterday, I determine that the legs were two long.  This morning I cut eight inches off each leg.  The bottom two legs have casters.  So I cut eight inches off the top of the legs.

I got a good start at cutting off the legs.  I hung it on the corner of my work bench, and began cutting with my battery operated circular saw.   The saw stop just before I completed the cut.  My phone rang.  Carol was ready to go to Fillmore to get some medication and some groceries.  I put the heavy weight on the leg to help hold it together while we were gone.  We drove to Fillmore and we were gone a little less than an hour.   We had lunch.  I then watered our plants in greenhouse six.

The tomato plants are doing well.  I put a few more tomato clips.  

One leg is off and I am ready to cut off the other leg.  After the leg is cut off, I held it together with a piece of plywood.  

The clamps hold everything together while I drill holes and screw it back together.

It was a pleasant surprise that it is level in both directions.  That was pretty amazing.

 The top is out of a piece of plywood,  There are several piece of plywood making the bottom shelf.

The bench is finished.  There is a piece of plywood on each side to help support the wood that is to be cut.  I have a few more adjustments to make to make it easier to miter longer pieces of wood.  I might make some wings that are hinges and then block them up.

I spent all morning looking for the family history records that are on my laptop.  I couldn't find them. Carol has an appointment with the eye doctor is at eleven.

When we got back we had lunch

Miter Saw Cart

I wasn't much motivated to do anything to day.  I surfed Face Book.  On face book I saw some dimension for a miter box stand.  I drew up a crude simple plans and went to the garage to start building.  

I did a screen shot of the plans that were posted on Face Book.

The two of the legs have casters.  I have several casters that have a threaded bolt or stem that I screw into a drilled hole.   The don't hold well attached to end grain.  I cut this short piece of 2x4 and made the hole in the cross grain.  There are four holes for the screws.  Two on each edge.  I tried all of my larger bit sizes until I found one that was the perfect size.  I held the wood in the wood vice.  It was easy to start and to tighten.

 I screwed it to the two back legs.

My Ryobi battery operated circular is working beyond my espectation.  I had put in a fresh battery.  It doesn't slow down.

I finished the two side legs.  I cut two rails; the top one for the miter saw, and the bottom one for the corded circular saw.

I could have put most of the cart together, but Carol called and wanted me to help go through all of our photo books.  We spent the rest of the afternoon removing any photo of Eric, who passed away yesterday.  There were dozens of books which started when Carol and I were married.

Rebuilt Three times & Bad News

Monday morning is a wash day.  Carol washed the sheets and other things that was not washed Sunday, yesterday.  I help with making the beds.  I stayed in the house until about ten.  By then the Monday morning chores were finished.

I then went out the garage to work on the wood box.

This is how it looked last Friday.  It is lopsided, there is a divider through the center.

It will not hold and wood that are longer than fifteen inches.  I took it all apart except for the bottom and sides.  I removed a lot of screws.  I removed the center partition.  I have a hard time remembering to take photos of each step. It is to dark to get good photos.

I got it put together.  the bench for the radial arm saw was not level.  I adjusted the legs by removing the blocks under each leg.   I got it leveled front and back and left and right.   The wood storage box would not even fit.     

I started over.  I used some wedges.  With a lever I could lift the front or either side.  I then slid the wedge under the legs.  I checked the spirit level and then made more adjustment.  I the buble in the spirit level was not between the two marks, but close enough.

The wood box then fit under the table top.  When ever I need some wood, I can pull the box out and move it out of the way.  I pull wood out of either side.

One reason for the wood box was to remove all of the junk off the work bench.

Kim Caso on Face Book, saw some photos of Joshua trees near Monroe, Utah.  I posted the above photo of a Joshua tree in our yard.

We got a call from our daughter-in-law.  She was crying so much that we couldn't understand here.  The paramedics were called.  One of them took the phone and reported that our son Eric suffered from cardiac arrest.  He was hooked up to a machine that did chest compressions and breathing for him.  They worked on him for over forty minutes, but could not revive him.

We were in the car in about ten minutes on our way to the Lehi Hospital.  I turned on the GPS that gave is directions.  There is so much construction, and being dark going the directions did not seem to be right.  We finally found the hospital.  Eric Gray, Lisa's husband, was waiting for us and told us that he had passed away.  We didn't hear anything from the hospital while we were driving.  My hope was that they had revived him and he would be making a complete recovery.  It wasn't to be.

We were at the hospital a little before ten.  Lisa and Eric, Robert and Jeanne were there and some of our grandkids.  Richard came a little later.  Eric was laying on his back on the gurney.  This is one of the saddest days of our life.  He was fifty years old and left four children.  Four months, three years, and two who are five year old.

We left the hospital about ten.  We followed Robert and made our way back to the freeway.  We were home by twelve.

2x4's and Other Boards

2 February: Thursday
I worked most of the day on the box for storing small boards.  I built it twice.  I have a lot of pieces and ends of boards that I piled the under the extension of my radial arm saw.  I have had it for many years.  I moved the boards and they are on the floor and piled on benches where I don't have any place to work.  If I need some bench space, I have to move some boards to other places.

A couple of days ago I made storage for some of our canned food.  The above photo is of a divice I put on a shelf.  I can put items under it and then put things on top of it.

 I watered some of the plants that I have in house six.  The main one. the pomegranate, I hadn't watered for several days.  There are some tomato plants that are doing well.

Several have fruit on them.  The cherry tomatoes come on first.

I had to cut many of the pieces with my battery powered circular saw.  I put a heavy weight on my ruler.  It helped in drawing a straight line.

I thought that I was finished with the wood box, but I had made it completely wrong.  I removed the one side as shown in the above photo.  The plywood ends should be removed.  I ended up nearly taking it all apart.

If the ends are remove and the sides in place, I can put in the boards form either side.  Some photos at the end better illustrated how it is done.

 Here is one end with a bottom shelf and a top shelf.  The top shelf is at an angle.  I had to take off and fix it.

After lunch it went to Fillmore to get some screws and four castors.  I got two small ones and two large ones.  When I got home I put the two small ones on either side of the bottom.  That really help to move it around.  The large castors were way to big.  I went back to Ropers' and exchanged them for the smaller ones.  I worked another couple of hours taking apart and more rebuilding

The above photo shows how I attached the casters in a diamond pattern.  The two on the side are mounted on a piece of plywood.  The two on the ends are mounted directly to the wood box.  It is a whole lot easier to move.  

A closer looked at one of the ends of the wood box.  The box would not fit under part of the table saw.  I could cut some of the top or raise the radial arm saw.  I raised the saw 1 3/4 inches.  I put a short 2x4 under each leg of the saw.  That helped.  I have a work bench to the left of the saw.  I moved it about four inches to the left.  I can now push the wood box in and easily move it in and out.
