Box

Didn't watch much news this morning.  We are tired of all of the looting and burning of privet property that is in the news all of the time.  I turned on the water on the back lawn last night. everything went well except for one sprinkler on the east end of the lawn.  It was pointing toward one of the hemp plants and got stuck.  It washed soil down and was stopped by the rocks.

After breakfast we started putting the 'boxes' together.  We didn't really know how to do it.  We called Lisa.  She sent some photos by email which helped out a lot.

 We got a system worked out and and we were putting them together rapidly.

I killed two yellowjacket nests this evening.  I grabbed their nests with two plastic grocery bags and smashed them and then put them in the

Mowing and Trimming

The first thing I did this morning was to take a picture of the thermostat.  I didn't put a the fan in the window last night.

There was a four degree drop over night without the fan running.

 I trimmed the edges of the lawn.  It took me over and hour.

I got the weeds by the tractor with the weed eater.  The battery went dead before I finished the lawn.

I started to mow and ran out of gas by house five.  Shane and his crew took the gas from me and filled the lawnmower tank.

They wanted to make a video history of the nursery.  They asked me questions about how I started Great Basin Natives.  We walked around the front of our yard and identified some of the native plants.

 

I dumped the weeds north of the corn instead of on the compost pile. 

There is a lot of crabgrass growing the that I covered them with grass clippings. 

 The early corn is showing silk.

These cabbage plants are being eaten by earwigs, at least I think they are.

Near the end of the day I took my weed eater cut down the weeds that are north of house two.

The strawberry plants are growing runners.  To keep the runner in contact with the soil I made staples out of tie wire.  I pushed into the soil at the node.  Roots will grow there and start a new plant.

They decided to clean up the west end of house five which is next to our back lawn,  Here four are working.

We drove to Fillmore this afternoon.  We then drove up Chalk Creek canyon quite a few miles looking for a camp ground.  We didn't find so we turned around and came home.

The thermostat temperature tonight is 75 degrees.

Fixing the Shed

This is one of the mornings that I did something which was the furthest thing from my mind.  I will explain that later.  I did several things where I for got to take some pictures.

I had the fan in the front room window all night.  When I got up the thermostat said 64.  I turned on the heat.  It was 66 degrees when I took the picture.

I ate breakfast which is a bowel of old fashion oats with raisons, and an open face piece of toast smoothened with catchup and a fried egg .

A friend, yesterday, loaded a bunch of pallets on my truck.  This morning I stopped at the post office and got the dump key.  I drove to the dump and backed into the area where construction waste is dumped.  Was able to back into the area and pull off the wood and pallets.  There was a piece of two inch PVC pipe that I could use.  All of the material is in a big hole.  The pipe was in an area where I couldn't reach and one end was buried deep in the rubble and I don't think I could have pulled it out.

I came home and did a few things in the garden.  We needed a few things in Fillmore.  We walked into the Fillmore Market with face masks on.  There were a few people with masks, but most were unmasked.  A couple of days ago I got a courtesy phone call saying that thee was a prescription for me to get.   We stopped at the drug store to get it, but they wouldn't give it to until the thirty pills I got last week.

After lunch dug up the rest of the wild lettuce that was between the shed and the grape vines.

I put the sprinkler in the south end of the raspberry plants and ran water for one hour.  The i moved it to the north end for another hour, but I forgot to turn it off so it ran longer than an hour.

for the rest of the day I worked on the shed.  The wind whipped the poly on the shed.  I fixed it.

I put a strip of firing on each side.  I had to pull it tight then screw it in.

Weeds, Earwig Spray

I tried to get the photos in a chronological order.  But sometimes if forget to take the picture and half to go back and take the picture.

Our dahlias are getting eaten alive by earwigs.  The one on the front is an example of all the others.  There are some that the earwigs haven't found yet.

I mixed up a batch of Ortho Home Defense which according to the label kills earwigs.

I finally found the directions.  One tablespoon per gallon of water.  I made three batches.  The last batch was for one and one half gallons of water.  One tablespoon plus one half tablespoon.  I sprayed potatoes, cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower. 

I picked more peas this morning.  The tote was one fourth full.  Carol shelled all of them.  We had potatoes and green pea sauce for supper this evening.  It was very good.

I made the trellis for the three of the grape plants that were getting larger.  I used tie wire because it is way cheaper than sixteen gage wire and easier to put up than barb wire.

I took photos of all three.  I tied the vine to the trellis with garden twine.

The old pallets that have been near the grape vines was quite and eyesore.  I loaded them on the cart and hauled them out the road by some other pallets.

The water I use for irrigation of the north garden has leaked out at this point in the garden.  I decided to fix it.  I pulled connection apart.

and put a lot of pipe cement on both parts of the joint.  I pushed it together and held it until the joint held.

This is the last of the sweet potato slips.  This is not a slip, the top end of the mother sweet potato.  I buried it in the center of the raised bed.

This is where I put the old pallets.  I pulled a heavy oak pallet which I couldn't lift.  I decided to take it apart because I could use the oak.

I moved this wet bail of straw about a foot to the west.  I had to put a pipe under it which I was able to lift and slide it over.  I used the sledge hammer to drive the pipe under the bail of straw.

I planted over a dozen Zucchini seeds in the compost and then watered it.  That is way to many.  I will have to pull some out later.  The package says forty-five days to harvest.   The is a month and a half.  Plenty of time.

Tony Deardnen who owns the house on the corner west of us, stopped while I was taking the pallet apart.  He has a big skid steer.  He was right back and loaded it on our truck.

I dug out a lot of the wild lettuce which some were nearly two feet tall.  Most were on the north side of the grape vines.

Minutes ago the phone rang and it was Charlie Brown from the Manti temple it was good to hear from him.

Wind & Sweet Potato Slips

After breakfast and a little bit of news, I filled up the back pack sprayer and loaded it on the truck.  Then I drove up to the main ditch and sprayed the weeds in the ditch.  It didn't take me long. 

I came back home and sprayed the weeds in the driveway and west of the berm until the tank was empty.

 There are two Apache Plums that are showing all of the plumy seeds.  I got the picture.

They are beautiful at this time of the year.  

The sweet potato slips are ready to be planted.  I pushed an old shovel handle into the raised bed and made four holes. 

 I put a slip in each hole and pushed the soil around it.  I clipped off all the leaves except one.  I watered it several times .

I have four sweet potato rooted cuttings that I wanted to get planted.  I pulled up all of the radish plants.  There were a few good ones, but I put them in the compost pile anyway.   I thought that I got a picture of the new piece that was added but I couldn't find it on my smart phone.

I found four five foot pieces of 2x6 redwood boards.  I was making a new frame to put on top of the old one.   I walked out to the greenhouse to get the wheel barrow.  I wanted some compost for the sweet potato raised bed.  Shane England and his wife, Jenifer, were there.  I asked him for the location of the wheel barrow.  It had some tree branches on it.  He dumped them.  Jenifer asked me about native plants.  She wanted a list.  There were some claret-cup cacti.  I gave them to her.  She asked a lot of questions about gardening.  I showed her our garden.  I figured it was part my ministering.

I didn't get the picture of the sweet potato addition that I make because of the distractions.

I loaded the up the wheel barrow and could hardly move it, because the tire needed more air.  I put air in the tire.  The wheel rubbed against the barrow and I could hardly move it.  Well I oiled the axel and that didn't help.  I took off the wheel and put a shim under each brace.  That fixed the problem.

I put the bail of straw on its edge and put compost on it and watered it in.  I haven't decided what to plant there.

I put in two quarts of fertilized water in each baskets.  The ladder helped me reach the to of the baskets.

I removed the dead lemon tree.

Flag day today.  The flag caught the wind and was hanging straight.

I moved five irises to our iris garden.

 The beat are hiding our ever bearing strawberry plants.  I washed.

They are pretty large.  I will cook some for lunch tomorrow.
