Another Trip to Manti

The first thing this morning was to pick the peas.

There were a lot of peas this morning.  Carol and I started on the west end of the while it was a little cooler and as we picked we worked our way to the shade.  We picked the two buckets which were over half full.

I prepared a CSA bucket for the Masner's.   In the bucked were beets. tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, parsley, leeks, salad onions, and peas.

We then drove to Manti for our temple assignment.

Hung More Tomatoes

Alliums and Foxtail lilies in various places in our yard.

The dry garden next to the road on the north side of our house.  Foxtail lilies and alliums.

This one is in the south west corner of our yard.  These are foxtail lilies.

This is another one in the south west corner of our yard next to the grape vines and asparagus plants.  All are alliums.

There is a lot of parsley growing in front of the lemon trees west of the driveway.  Carol started to cut them out and gave her some help.  They were going to seed and by cutting the down there will be new growth.

 Sprayed some weeds where we planted the latest corn.  The corn hasn't germinated. and the weeds were pretty tiny.  I also sprayed weeds in house six.  In this particular spot there was a lot of morning glory.  I put the red beets so I could spray the morning glory.

I moved them out of the way so I wouldn't spray them.  I hung the rest of the tomato plants in house six except for a couple.

I put together two buckets of vegetables together.  The first of the CSA boxes together.  I used the frosting buckets that we got from Sam's Club last week.

 Carol wanted me to trim the ground cover that started to cover the walk way.

Yesterday I pulled all of the old black tubing on the lawn under the cherry tree.  I put it in the back of our pick up.  There were a few drops of rain, but I took it to the dump.

Planting & More Beer

This morning I went out to house two to see how it is going.

One of the beer containers had this large slug.  It is about one inch long.  There is not much evidence of the slugs eating the radishes.

I pulled a couple of dozen radishes.  Most of them were free from slug damage.  

It is about time to plant some peas.  I planted one 1206 tray with Green Arrow peas.  There are two peas in each cell.  I watered them well and put them on the heading pads.  

I planted two six packs with burpless cucumbers. 

I covered each cell with some vermiculite and put them in the bucket with water in the bottom.  They soaked up the water and were completely wet.

The sticky traps are filling up with a lot of flying insects.  This one is attached to the bamboo stick.  It is placed in a horizontal position.

I don't know why I didn't think of this idea a coupe of years ago.  The doorway to house three has poultry wire door to keep the cats out.  I put on this hook and eye latch to keep the door closed.  At night I close the storm door during the cold nights.

 We went to Fillmore for some groceries.  I bought a can of beer filled these small portion containers.  I made a small hole and pushed them into the ground so the top of the containers is level with the ground.

I hoed out all of the weeds in house six.  Most were grasses.  The milk weeds , I gave them to the chickens.  They really like them.

I cut two bunches of French parsley.  I made two CSA sacks  with parsley, radishes, and onions.

Cool, Frost Free

Last night I picked tomatoes in house six.  I turned off the furnace and wanted pick incase it would freeze.  We it was frost free,

Before we went to Fillmore, we took the tomatoes to the post office.  Carol needed to get some birthday cards.  We then came home.  We were gone less than any hour.  As soon as we got home I began harvesting beets, beet greens, and cucumbers.

This is the second box that I took to the post office.  It is a partial CSA box.

After lunch I started plans for the patio.  There will be a 3 x 7 foot deck out of the south door.  There will be railings and three steps to the concrete patio.  I hope to have it built by the middle of November.

I watched a bunch of You Tube videos on deck construction and got some good ideas of how to build it.

I removed some tomato plants in house six.

House One, Cleaner

I filled the bird feeder with bird food.  It has been empty for over a month.  And no birds today.

 It took over an hour to harvest scallions, red beets, tomatoes, and cucumber.  The beets and scallions are in the tote.

Share the Bounty is at the post office, where people can bring their extra fruits and vegetables.  We have put our extra out almost everyday.

I finished unhooking the cucumber vines. They were on the right or the east side.

I had to dig out some of the tomato plants.  They were in the way of my raking.

Here they are all raked to either side.

Quick Trip to Provo

A couple of day ago we decided to go to Provo to get some supplies that we are out of or nearly out of.  We planned to leave at nine, but didn't get away until half past nine.  I wanted to take some produce to the post office before we left.  I went out to house two at eight.  I cleaned the top of the table.  That is where I would begin cleaning.

I dug the scallions first and put them in the black bucket to wash off most of the soil.  I pulled the clumps apart and removed most of the soil.  I then pulled of the outside leaves. I pulled the red beats and washed them the same way.

 

I cut of any remaining roots and washed the again in the first white bucket and then they went into the next bucket.  I repeated that process until all the scallions were in the bucket on the right.  Then I washed the beets.  Five beets with their greens are in each bunch and held together with a rubber band.  The same for the scallions.  They were put in the tote on the right end of the table.

I picked a dozen or so tomatoes.  They were washed and put in the tote on the left.  The last thing in the tote are onions.  Not mentioned earlier is one zip bag full of red beets.

We then drove to Provo and bought our  supplies at Sam's Club.  We had lunch at the nearby Chuck o Rama.  We got a some cherry juice concentrate at the Red Barn.

After arriving home I changed clothes and started cutting down tomato plants in house one.  It was so hot I decided to do something else.

I picked the large cucumbers to feed them to the chickens.  I usually open them up with a shovel.  I wanted something much easier.  I made a jig to hold them while I cut the with my radial arm saw.  It worked pretty good, but a little bit dangerous and left the back wall covered with cucumber saw dust.  It really wasn't dust, but it all wet with juice and small parts of the cucumber.

I turned the jig end to end and used a bread knife and safely and easily cut them in half.

The weather is so warm and the wild grasses are growing, I decided to spray the weeds.  I filled the tank three times and sprayed the weeds in the dry garden north of the house; the weeds by the grape plants and weeds in other places.

The above photo shows asparagus on the right and the black tank at the east end of this garden.  

The post holding some of the cucumber vines is leaning to the right.  It may break because of the weight of the cucumbers.  I drove a conduct stake nest to it.

With a zip tie pulled the leaning post against the stake.

Corn Stalks and Rain

Last week I bought a furnace filer.  Today I put it in the furnace.  I put a date on it so I will not how long it has been in.  It is recommended that the filter be replaced every month.  I think that I will replace it sometime in mid December.  

I filled up this tote with tomatoes, scallions. onions, and beet greens.  This is a sample of CSA weekly box except it would be twice as big.  I took this to the post office.

While I was harvesting the scallions, I noticed the worm dropping on the leaves of a bell pepper plant.  They are the black spots on the left side of the photo.

I then saw this worm attached to the edges of a leaf that it was eating.  It reminded me of a tomato worm,  but this must be a pepper worm.  This is the first time that I have seen any type of worm on our pepper plants.

We drove to Fillmore before lunch for some groceries.  The regular cucumbers were being sold for $.99.  The burpless cucumber were marked at $2.99 each.  We bought two ice cream cones which we ate on the way home.

After lunch I went to work removing the corn stalks.  I removed the twine that was supporting the plants.  It is laying on the ground at the back of the garden.  Then I picked the ears of corn that was two old to be eaten.  I gave some to the chickens.  I cut all the corn stalks.  I took them to the south part of the garden for them to decompose during the winter.  I was raining a little and I got two pairs of gloves that I was wearing wet.

 I made this frame to wind the twine.  There is a handle on the left side where I would hold while I wrapped the twine.  It was too big and hard to wrap.

I made a smaller one and it was much easier to wrap the twine.

I cut down most of the tomato plants in house one,  There is one row left on the far west side.  I may get that tomorrow.

All the tomato clips that ere not broken are to be saved for next year.  While I was doing this we had about ten minutes of hard rain.

After supper we went to the post office to get our tote.  Every thing was gone.  Will fill the tote Wednesday morning take it back to the post office.
