Pruning

Robert and Jeanne were here about 10:30  Robert bought a Dewalt back pack sprayer.  He took it out of the box and put it together.  He had a quart of Sevin worm spray.   The back pack sprayer would hold four gallons of stray  He filled it half full.

He then sprayed all of the apple trees for the apple maggot.   We will spray every two weeks.

We brought the big Dracaena out of house five put it in the ground.  Robert dug a hole which was perfect.

Robert is pruning the maple tree in the front yard.  He is cutting off dead branches.  We hauled them to the dump.  

Here Robert is cutting off dead branches from the poplar tree.  There is a Utah Juniper one the east corner of our yard.  Robert pruned off all of the bottom branches.    We also hauled those to the dump.  We made three trips.  

Shane wanted to take the tractor to his home in Fillmore.  He wanted to spread some compost on his garden.  He loaded the tractor on my trailer.  He used my compressor to fill one of the tires.

Here is the photo of the Dracaena standing up straight.  There is new growth at the top.  It has been in the garage all winter.  In the late winter we put it at the west end of greenhouse five.

Moving the Dracaena

 I watched a couple of the wood working shows and then started digging up the Dracaena.

I started digging up the tall Dracaena.  I put pieces of plywood on both sides.   Each shovel full of soil was put on the plywood.  I dug quite a while before I was able to tip it over and roll it out of the hole.  I got the two wheel ed cart, I put it on the cart, but couldn't it was to heavy for me to lift it up.

Justin Smith was working in the hemp.  I asked him to help me.  He picked it up and pull it to the driveway and then pushed it into the garage.  The Dracaena was so tall that it is wedge against the ceiling and leaning against the workbench.  The photo is fuzzy.  

By now it is lunch time.  I picked seven or eight ears of corn.  Carol ate one and I ate three.  It tasted so good.

Here the Hemp crew is harvesting the hem.  There has been a bunch of people working there all day long and into the evening.

I prepared the carrots for the winter by cutting off most of the tops of the carrots.

Here are the ones that I dug.  I took them into the house.  I washed them twice and cut of the rest of the tops.  Carol put them in a zip bag and put them in the fridge.

I walked past the Big Tooth maple tree.  The leaves most yellow and a careful look will reveal some reddish leaves.

I dug the potatoes.  There weren't as many as I had hopped.  The crate on the left holds the larger potatoes and then one on the right has the smaller ones.

The fire marshal told us to prune the ash tree and the lilac tree.  I pruned them some last week.  When he was here reading the meter, he instructed me cut off more branches.  I cut off one large branch.  There were a couple of more branches that needed cutting off.  I got several ladders and asked Dustin to help me.  One heavy branch would fall on the  power line.  I put the ladder against the branch and he tied one end of a piece of heavy twine to a crotch.  I pulled on it while he cut off the branch  

I backed the truck into the drives way and loaded them into the truck.   I had to cut some into smaller pieces.

The last picture of the day shows the back lawn cleaned up.

Mowed Lawn & Finished Stool

After breakfast I killed about seven yellow jackets.  Some of them were in the shed and the others were in the hen house. I removed the the hoses and started mowing the grass in the front yard.  The oil was normal.  The grass was quite tall.

The corn is growing. 

The first load of grass was put around the geraniums below Carol's bedroom window.  Later in the day I run the sprinkler on them for over an hour.   The sun should bleach the grass clipping.

Dumped the next two loads on top of the wild lettuce that I pulled yesterday in the raspberry patch.

The trunk of the Dracaena had died. I cut it off.   

The earwigs are thick in the dahlia flowers.  I sprayed all of them with and insecticide.

I picked a bunch of  burpless cucumbers.  The are going to the post office, "share the harvest"

The wheel barrow was in the shed and it was falling apart.  I fixed it a couple months ago.  I planned to fix it again.   It was in terrible shape.  All of the wood needed to be replaced,  The barrow was full of big holes.  It would take a long time to fix it.

I finished the stool that i started to make yesterday.  It is seventeen inches tall.  For some reason there is a bad photo.

Saturday Morrning & Monday

29 February 2020 Saturday Morning
I watched my wood working TV show this morning.  Both were reruns, and the third one was canceled.  I went out to the garage and did some more cleaning.

The photo above shows my drill press.  The bench that my drill press was sitting on was covered with sawdust and a bunch of other junk.  I vacuumed off most of the sawdust.  

There was not much light so this photo is pretty fuzzy.  There were a lot of tools under the bench.  I moved them and set them aside for a moment.  In the corner there were a lot of sprinkler pieces that at one time were used to irrigate the pasture which was here when we bought this place.  I put them on the wheel cart in the back yard.

I put some screws in the table saw stand.  This was a good place to hang some of the wrenches.
2 March 2020 Monday
Shane England who rented our place paid the rent.  He said that I could put our Dracaena in the west end of house five.  We drove to Fillmore to make a deposit at the bank and credit union.  We bought some groceries.

Shane and Jessan wheeled it to house five.  Hopefully it will do a lot better out than being in the garage.   I started to make a bar stool  I watched a You Tube channel.  I cut all of the pieces, chamford the edges, and sanded them began to assemble the parts.   I started wrong and had to go back and watch the video again.  I went back several times and watched it again.  I made it out of old pieces of 2x4's and an old piece of plywood.  It was quite easy to put together and all parts were plum and square. All parts were joined together with screws with not glue.

It looks pretty good.

And here is another picture.  I took it in the house and set on it.  It was not at all comfortable,  Most of the comments on You Tube were negative.  Tomorrow afternoon I going to make some modifications.   I may take it all apart.  I am going to shorten it,  use glue and ad some braces.

Moved Trees/Shrubs to Garage

A good Day at the Manti Utah Temple.

These are the pictures for the day.

We made it home a little before one.  I walked out to house six and all of the plants were gone except a few cucumber plants.  The photo is from the west looking east.

This is from the east looking west.   The green on the left are the cucumber plants.  The were trellised on concrete reinforcement wire.  I pulled off the cucumber vines. Shane and I rolled them up and took them out side.

Yesterday, I moved the dracaena which was on the front porch, to house six.  It is the green one in the white pot.

This afternoon,  I dug up the dracaena plant.  Shane and Duston helped me move it.  We put it on the dolly and pushed it into the garage.  We put it on some bricks. the plant was too big.  Some of the top leaves were pushed against the ceiling.

Later I pulled up the lemon plants.  They were easy to pull out of the ground where they have been all summer   We will keep them in the garage until next spring.  They will have to be watered.

I measured house one to get dimensions of the roof to order poly.  I called Steve Regan to get a quote.

First Night of Frost

I get up around 5:30 most mornings and this morning was no different.  The temperature in the house was 66 degrees which is the coldest morning since early spring.  It starts getting light at seven.

The first frost of the fall.  The is the front lawn.  There is not frost under the trees.  I worked at the computer making a list of seeds that I am going to order now for next spring.  I order 300 geranium seeds.  They will be planted around the first of December

We picked beans.  This is most likely our last picking.  I'm expecting them to freeze tonight.  We didn't get a lot, but there is enough for dinner tonight.  We took some vegetable to the Masner's.  We left some hot peppers at the post office.  Most were gone this evening.  In the above picture, Carol is picking beans on the south side of the hoop trellis.

I pruned the lantana, removed the hanging baskets, and moved the purple fountain grass.  One on each side of the door.  We rearranged the other Halloween things.  It looks pretty good.

The lemon trees were buried in the ground.  I dug two up and the other one I pulled it right out of the ground.  The pots and trees were buried last spring to keep them from blowing over.  It worked.  The wind blew and blew and they stayed right were I put them.

I dug up the pomegranate tree, and loaded it on the cart, put it in house two.

And one from the right side.  The photo doesn't show it but it is setting on a large round concrete donut.  The bottom of the nursery can is somewhat convex.  The donut is a stable base.

I turned of the power to the well.  I turned on all the hose bibs at the west end of the garden so the water would drain out of the buried pipes.

I remove the timer and put it away so it would not freeze and break.

The arrow is pointing to the ball valve.  I opened it to let the water drain out.

I dug up the dracaena that we have had for many years.  I drove in three half inch conduit pipes.  One in back and two, one on the left and the other one on the right.  They hold the dracaena straight up.  And every year it gets a little bigger.  To right you see the pomegranate tree on top of the concrete donut.

There may be a hard freeze tonight, so I picked a couple of watermelons.

 And three topaz melons.

And spaghetti squash.
