Hoop Progress

After a good day at the Manti Utah temple.  We left early this morning and were home a little after one.  I could hear the tractor running.  I walked out and got a picture.  

Jim Burns has been working on it.  He took off the tires.  They were in bad shape.  Wouldn't hold any air.  He has some ordered.  They are over to Steve's Tires.

Jim and Jessen made some repair.  The front axel on the right side contained a key that was stripped.  The wheel had no power.  They fixed it.  I found a new nut; Jim found a washer.

I began work on the hoops.  I put the above seriously bent hoop up yesterday.  To take out some of the wrong bends, put a 2x6 piece of wood on the inside and another one on the outside to cover the bend.  I then clamped the two together and tightened them.  I worked somewhat, but when the clamps are taken off, the bend may spring back.

I put the other two up.  It really went much better.

There are five hoops.  I put up the last two today.

The two I put up today are cow panels. I put the two together and joined them with bailing wire.  You can see the gap between by looking at the 2x6 gap at the ground.

Cleaning the Pole Bean Trellis

This blog covers Saturday, Sunday, and today, Monday.

Saturday morning, I picked up the tote at the post office, and there was one bunch of beets left.  It was badly wilted.  I brought it home and was going to throw it away, but decided to cook it instead.  I boiled it and put it in the fridge.  When we got home from the temple I warmed it up and in the micro wave.  I seasoned it with salt and pepper and put on a healthy portion of butter.  It was pretty good.  It tasted as though it were freshly picked and boiled

We put a kohlrabi the over with a casserole and squash.  When we got home from church the casserole was nearly done.  After twenty minutes the casserole was done.  the kohlrabi was not tender.  I left it in the over for about 45 minutes.  It was finished and I didn't take it out until supper.

The kohlrabi was pretty old and tough.  I cut off the more tender top and baked it in the over.

 I peeled the kohlrabi and cut half of it into small pieces.  I the salted and peppered it and then put on it melted butter.  It was tender and tasted pretty good.

The half was cut into small pieces and then covered with sour cream.  It tasted good.

I took the red fountain grass that was on the front porch and took it to house two.  I am saving it for next year..  

I pulled a bunch of beets, removed dead leaves, and carefully washed them.  I sorted them in to bunches and held the bunch together with a rubber band.  I made six bunches.  I then picked six nice cucumbers.

The same tote but at the post office.  Yesterday, ended daylight saving time.  When if got home I prepared my lunch.  Instead of lunch at eleven thirty, I started lunch an hour earlier.  I ate left over soup.

There were three bales of straw which I took out to the garden.  I am making a large area covered with leaves, grass clippings, and corn stalks, which I will plant in the mulch and drip irrigate it.

Using the blower, I blew the leaves into a large pile.  It took three tarp loads  to move it out to the mulch garden.  I covered the corn stalks and other plant material with leaves.

I blew the leaves on the west side of the sidewalk across the driveway onto the other lawn and then out to the garden..

The pole bean hoop was covered with dead bean plants.  They need to be remove before a heavy snow would collapse the hoop.  I worked on that for over an hour.  The dead bean plants are gone.

I cut the fountain grass and put in the compost pile.

Saturday, Sunday, & Monday

We went to the temple Saturday, and I didn't have time to post anything.

I was able to plant another tray of Detroit Red Beets.  They begin to germinate in five to six days.

The peas are pretty much dried up.  I dug up an armful and put them one the compost pile. I did this and other weeding while watering some parts of our garden.

The watermelons are receiving a good soaking.  I did some weeding here.

I weeded around the sweet potatoes which are doing very well.

I may have taken some pictures on Sunday; but I wait until Monday to post anything.

This morning I hurried out to house six.  I wanted to get ready for the concrete reinforcing wire.  I dug out all of the kohlrabi  and piled them in the main isle.  It was pretty muddy there.  

I loaded the kohlrabi into the wheelbarrow and hauled it out to the compost pile.

The seedless cucumber are getting a good watering.  The water comes on every night at seven for two hours before it shuts off.

I got a good picture is garden spider.

It must have caught a grasshopper.  All that is left is one grasshopper leg.

I did a lot of tomato pruning before lunch.  Some of those branches may grow a couple feet during a week.  

 An interesting tomato.  I am not sure but I think that this is a cutting from a tomato plant that I dug up last fall.  I kept it in house two all winter.  The fruit from the one in house two is much smaller.

I made another bow for Blue Lake pole beans.  This went much faster than the first one I did last week.  I secured the south side of the hoop.  Next I tied the middle piece to the greenhouse bows.  Last I secured the north side of the hoop.

 Found another wasp nest under the bench in house six.  I sprayed them with WD-40.

 Lastly, I weeded five trays of cone-Tainers and put them in trays which I cut off 4 1/2 inches off the legs.  They are now on pad one where the will be watered.

Direct TV Installed This Morning

I worked in house six for an hour.  Came back to the house for the News and breakfast.

I have a tray of sixteen tomato plants.  I cleaned away a lot of weeds in the first isle on the north side.  I then dug holes about eighteen inches apart on the west half of the row.  Then the sixteen plants were put in the holes.  I didn't have time to hang them, so I clamped them to bamboo stakes pushed into the ground.  Some of them are nearly two feet tall.  This evening when I turned the water on, I moved the drip line next to the plants.

There are two plants at the west end that are bare root planting.

The man from Direct TV came this morning.  He was here for about an hour hooking our TV to the Direct TV network.  

This is not a pretty picture.  In the west edge of our yard there are some bricks that I did not need for our house.  This kitten was on the same pallet that the brick were on.  Several weeks ago I could smell a dead animal.  I found it today.

 The Blue Lake pole beans are ready to plant.  I prepped this hoop trellisfor the beans.

I don't want the bottom rods touching the ground.  They might rust.  I put a brick under each panel corner.  

We planted these corn plugs last week.  The plants on the left are pretty green.  The ones on the right are quite yellow.  I fertilized those on the left after they were planted.  Those on the right were not fertilized.  Quite a difference.  I put fertilizer on those on the right today.  We will see how the look next week.

The onions are doing very well, but they have a lot of weeds.  This is a hands and knees type of job.  I run water down the row to soften the soil.
