Surprise Visit From Lisa and Emi

We woke up to more snow.  About two inches on the driveway.  I tried to blow off the snow. but it was too heavy.  I used my snow plow to push off the snow.  I quit and went back to the house.  I watched some of the news, boiled the eggs and made the toast.  Carol really slept  in.  I went back out and pushed some more snow.

I walked out to greenhouse two.  The furnace was on.  A mouse dug up something in the tray.  There was another tray that yesterday a mouse made a hole in the bottom of it.

We drove to Fillmore for some groceries.  Lisa called and told us that she is coming to see us.  We bought lettuce, bread, and baloney for some sandwiches.  I also bought some mouse traps to catch the mouse or mice.  I screwed the trap to small board.  I didn't want the mouse to drag the trap away. I baited it with a little piece of bacon.  I also bought a spray bottle to make a soap solution for the aphids.

I bought a brush to scrub beats, carrots, scallions, and radishes.

The night snow left beautiful covered trees.

I pushed off the snow from the concrete driveway, and the driveway in front of the house.

Also, I pushed snow to make a path two the greenhouses.

This is the sidewalk in front of our house.  I pushed off the snow and later swept the side walk and steps.

Lisa and Emi brought us a Christmas tree.  It was a Christmas gift from Lisa and Elizabeth.

I cut a kohlrabi for the chicken.  They have eaten all the leaves.

Preparing for Tomorrow & A Little More Planting

 We worked for several hours this morning making more Corn Puff snacks.  We did two batches.  I forgot to take pictures.  We then made a large pot of Taco soup.  No pictures of this either.  In the morning we are going to Eagle Mountain for a family Christmas dinner.  The Corn Puff snacks and Taco soup is for this dinner.

This afternoon I did more paper shredding and planted more lettuce and kale.  

 

I took another picture of the kohlrabi.  The chickens at most of it and left a skeleton.

today

A daily ritual is to shred papers.  I did that until the shredder got too hot and shut off.  I came back later and did more shredding, and then a couple more times.  I may mention this in the next posting, but not how many times I shredded.

I have a lot of lettuce plants that are ready to be transplanted.  There is not room in house two to transplant all of them.  I am considering house six. They will not be heated in house six. 

 I transplanted fifteen sweet corn plants on the north end of bed six.

The geranium plants are doing well.  The true leaves are beginning to grow. They seem to change every day.

I have what I call a rough finish of the shredder table.  I did some sanding and counter sinking  the screws.

The bench in the above picture is upside down to show the rails look from the under side.

This shows how the 1x2 furring strip board are glued together to make a strong table leg.  This same concept can be used in benches and larger tables.

The table is laying on its side to show how the legs are attached to the rails.

 We passed out the rest of the Carmel puffs today.  Going to make another batch tomorrow.

I have been watering these hot pepper plants since last May.  No one is using them, so I pulled them up/

They really have quite a root system.

 I started another wire for the tomato plants.  It is easy to pull them tight with the turnbuckle.  I can also tighten the "J" bolt.

 I decided a couple of days ago to blow off the leaves that are on the lawn.  There is a couple of small clumps of snow.  All of my extension cords are being used for the Christmas lights.  I found a couple that were pretty twisted.

 I blew the leaves on the east lawn to both sides.  They were pretty wet and took more effort to move them, but with the help of three extension cords I was able to get it done.

I did the same on the south lawn.

kohlrabi was eaten by the chickens.  They really love them.  They peck and peck cleaned out the interior of the vegetable.  Picture below show more of the interior, but is pretty fuzzy.

Revere Health and and MRi

We left home this morning about 6:35.  Carol had an appointment for an MRI at Revere Health in Salem, Utah.  The traffic at that time in the morning  was not to heavy, but it was steady going south, but going north as were, there were not nearly as many cars going that way.  

By the time we were at the Yuba lake exit there was a beautiful sunrise.  I took this picture out of the car window while we were driving.  It was much prettier than the photo.

The Revere Health Center is huge.  There are two levels.  We walked into the entrance where we stopped at the receptionist.  She told us which way to go.  We checked in there.  The receptionist there checked Carol in.  They have sort of an iPad that Carol did what the receptionist does.  We were escorted to a small dressing room.  She was instructed to remove all jewelry and all her clothing that had contained any metal.  She then put a pair of pants and a blouse.  There was a locker for her clothing.  I took the key and Carol went for the MRI.  The technician said that it would take about thirty-five minutes.  I went back to the car and got my iPad.

In the above picture hangs picture on a wall made with old barn wood.  It was quite attractive.

We drove back to Walmart and bought a whole bunch of toys for our grandkids, and great grandkids.  We were in there for over and our.

We then went to the east bay Walmart and bought some supplies and a few toys.

We had lunch at the Great China Restaurant.  We eat here quite often on our trips to Utah County.

We stopped at Steve Regans in Spanish for where I got some triple twenty Peters fertilizer.

I don't remember where this small piece of furniture was. it was marked with a $150.00 tag.  It looked pretty easy to build.

When we got home I unloaded the car.  That took many trips between the car and the kitchen.

I walked out to the greenhouse to see how things were doing.  Everything looked good.   I cut a kohlrabi and some lettuce for the chickens.

A garage/shop is being built across the street and a little to the west of us.  They are preparing the floor for concrete.  There is a large pile of gravel in the front part of the garage.

House Six Cucumbers are no More

We were home from the Manti Temple a little earlier today.  I got quite a lot of work done.

This afternoon I removed the dead cucumber plants that were growing on the north side of house six.  I had to pull them up and remove the tomato clips.  I then wound the twine on the tomahook.

 I pulled all of the drip lines through the west door and laid them out in the orchard.  That made it much easier to pull the cucumber plants.

All the cucumber vines and many of the cucumbers are in this composting pile. There are tomato plants in the pile and well as other plants.

Last week I baked a kohlrabi plant.  I am going to do another one.

I cut one and took it the chicken run where I cut off all of the leaves.  The chickens love them.  It is in the fridge for tomorrow.

I didn't think that there were any tomatoes left.  But I picked a bucketful.  They are beginning to ripen.  These I will take to the post office tomorrow.

Cleaning the Pole Bean Trellis

This blog covers Saturday, Sunday, and today, Monday.

Saturday morning, I picked up the tote at the post office, and there was one bunch of beets left.  It was badly wilted.  I brought it home and was going to throw it away, but decided to cook it instead.  I boiled it and put it in the fridge.  When we got home from the temple I warmed it up and in the micro wave.  I seasoned it with salt and pepper and put on a healthy portion of butter.  It was pretty good.  It tasted as though it were freshly picked and boiled

We put a kohlrabi the over with a casserole and squash.  When we got home from church the casserole was nearly done.  After twenty minutes the casserole was done.  the kohlrabi was not tender.  I left it in the over for about 45 minutes.  It was finished and I didn't take it out until supper.

The kohlrabi was pretty old and tough.  I cut off the more tender top and baked it in the over.

 I peeled the kohlrabi and cut half of it into small pieces.  I the salted and peppered it and then put on it melted butter.  It was tender and tasted pretty good.

The half was cut into small pieces and then covered with sour cream.  It tasted good.

I took the red fountain grass that was on the front porch and took it to house two.  I am saving it for next year..  

I pulled a bunch of beets, removed dead leaves, and carefully washed them.  I sorted them in to bunches and held the bunch together with a rubber band.  I made six bunches.  I then picked six nice cucumbers.

The same tote but at the post office.  Yesterday, ended daylight saving time.  When if got home I prepared my lunch.  Instead of lunch at eleven thirty, I started lunch an hour earlier.  I ate left over soup.

There were three bales of straw which I took out to the garden.  I am making a large area covered with leaves, grass clippings, and corn stalks, which I will plant in the mulch and drip irrigate it.

Using the blower, I blew the leaves into a large pile.  It took three tarp loads  to move it out to the mulch garden.  I covered the corn stalks and other plant material with leaves.

I blew the leaves on the west side of the sidewalk across the driveway onto the other lawn and then out to the garden..

The pole bean hoop was covered with dead bean plants.  They need to be remove before a heavy snow would collapse the hoop.  I worked on that for over an hour.  The dead bean plants are gone.

I cut the fountain grass and put in the compost pile.
