Work on Shed Over for While

I started working on the shed fairly early today.    A better and faster way of supporting the shelves came to me since yester day

I took and eighteen inch 2x4 and removed a fourteen inch wedge.  It is illustrated in the above photo.  I placed the 2x4 on the table saw sled.  Weights are put on a piece of plywood at maybe twelve degree angle.   The weights keep the plywood from moving as I slowly push it through the spinning blade.  I drilled six holes the wider area.

This shows the completed shelves.   I keep forgetting to get more pictures showing more detail of this procedure.  I attached the shelf support three different ways.

 I put three screws in each shelf support.  It sagged some.  I then put in a piece of plywood above the shelf brace and screwed it to the stud.  That worked pretty good.

I glued a short piece of 2x4 below the shelf brace.  There is a screw from the top of the self brace into the glued 2x4.  That held really well.

 The last one I did was made out of an eighteen inch 2x4.  I cut off a wedge from the 2x4.  It was fast and easy way.  I didn't have to wait for any glue to dry.

We drove to Fillmore to change our social security deposits to State Bank of Southern Utah from The Wells Fargo Bank.  The first checks will be deposited on the second or third of February.  It took about thirty minutes to do that.

When we got home I went back to work on the shed.  I put in a hook for the highchair.  I am moving things out of the garage into the shed and this is one of them.  The space above the back header between the rafters is open.  Wind might blow snow and rain through those spaces.

I made pieces of plywood to fit between the rafters.  I cut them so that they would have a snug fit.  They were so tight that most likely they would never come.  However, I did hold them in with screws.  Later I will put a three inch boarder of plywood to cover the empty space under the rafters.

New things happening at the nursery.  House six which was the storage house was cleaned out.  Most of the stuff was put into house three.  Quite a lot of it was taken to the dump.  I was able to salvage some before it went to the dump.  They covered with a plastic.  The outside of it is white.  The inside is black.  It is there to keep the hemp plants shaded part of the day.

Jim Burns brought a  truck load of plants from Delta, Utah, this afternoon.  He backed close to the west door of house four.  They were loaded onto carts and pulled into house four.

The truck is unload into house four.  Most of the hemp plants were lousy with aphids.

Another Afternoon at the Shed

We spent the early morning at the Manti Utah temple.  We had lunch at the temple and soft ice cream at the Top Spot in Salina.

Yesterday. I made a shelf for the shed.  It went pretty well, except the shelf arms began to sag.  I had to put some supports on the stud under the shelf arm.

I glued the support piece to the shelf arm and held it in place with a screw.  

The above photo shows the arm brackets in place.  The arm bracket on the end is screwed to the back wall.

This photo shows how it is attached to the stud.  At this point I didn't screw the support to the stud because the glue has not cure.   The support might break if the glue was somewhat fresh.

I put the shelf in place for the photo.

Sunday & Monday

Sunday 12 January

Snow this morning when we got up.  But not to much.  It was just a dusting.   Instead of pushing the snow of the driveway,  I got out my blower and with three extension cords,  I began.

It went pretty fast.  I figure that it was much faster and blowing did a much better job than a shovel.  I also, blew of the snow on our front sidewalk.

Above are three sweet potatoes that I started December 12. which was exactly one month ago.   There are roots near the bottom of the potato that are beginning to grow.

I took out one of the potatoes and placed it on the white cloth.  It is much easier to the roots in this photo.

Monday January 13
With breakfast and the new over I began the morning work.  I wanted to build shelves for the shed.  I am moving a lot of things in the garage to the shed.

 I found a fairly nice sheet of 4x8 plywood.  I brought it to the patio and placed it on my pair of sawhorses.  With my new battery operated circular saw.  I measured sixteen inches to make a shelf.  I added four inches.  There is an eight foot firing board that I was going to use to guide my saw.  It didn't work because the board was to thick.  I then drew a line.  The saw worked really well, except when the blade stopped because of twisting the saw some.

I glued the rest of the pieces together for the push stick caddy together.  I then clamped it.   While the glue is curing I began work on the shelf.

I made some 2x2x20 inches long to hold the boards.  I screwed them to the studs.  I but three srews in each one.

I put the plywood on the braces, and put some of the stuff on the shelf.  The shelf began to sag some.

I fixed it by putting a small piece of plywood above the brace.  I did that to each stud.  That fixed the problem.

 The glue has cured some.  I drilled a hole on each side for a pencil.  The above photo showing the pencils and the tape measures in the pockets.

The last photo of the push stick caddy shows it completed containing the push sticks.

The fertilizing system leaking badly a couple of weeks ago.  The above photo shows that it has been fixed and doesn't leak any morel

Snow Wasn't Much After All

Today is our temple day and there was not much time to get anything done.  I watched my three woodworking programs and then spent about and our in the garage.

There was only a trace of snow all the way to Manti.

I had to cut a short piece of wood off of another short piece.  I held the piece to a longer piece with a clamp.  Holding it to the miter gage I slowly pushed it through the saw blade.

The two short piece are glued to a base plywood  and to a backer wood.  I made two of them.

This will be glued to push stick caddy.  One on each side two hold the two tape measures that I have.

This fuzzy photo is of the empty caddy.

The back push stick is put in place.  It is made out of pine and gets beat up.  It is easy to replace

The next on is another stick made out of pine.

This one is made out of 1/8 inch Masonite.  There is a hook on the right side which is used by ripping narrow pieces of wood.  

I have two of them.

This one is made out of half inch plywood.  Setting the caddy next to the table saw, makes it easy to grab.

The large push stick is lined up first.  That is the one that I use most often.   This is more like a proto type.  When I get time I will make a new caddy with some redesigned push sticks.

There were snowy roads by Scipio Lake,  but the freeway going south from Scipio was only wet.

Two New Projects

Woke up this morning to a good dusting of snow.  Breakfast and news.

I cleaned of the snow on the driveway and the front sidewalk.  A very light dusting of snow.

I then began a serious cleaning in the garage,  I sent a lot of stuff aside to take to the dump which I did in the late afternoon.  I cleaned the dust, sawdust, and woodchips. that were on the floor.  I removed more stuff.

A couple of years ago, I bought a case of clam shelf containers.  I didn't use many of them.  I took the box out to the shed.  The photo above shows the box..

The door in the back of the garage goes to the chicken run.  I rebuilt the box for a step up before stepping down.  That took me about an hour.

I have seven push sticks for the table saw to make sawing small piece of wood.  The push sticks were always covered or the one I wanted was at the bottom of the pile.

A 2x6 is used as the base.  It looks a little like bookends.  I put a  piece on the right end and put spacers between them.  They are held in place with screws.  It is a push stick caddie.

On the left is a heavy duty push stick, nest is another one made of half inch plywood, next two are made out of Masonite for ripping thin pieces of  wood.  The last two are made of pine.  They get beat up and are easily replaced.

I have a nice tool chest, but I have tow open two or three drawers before I get the right drawer.  I labeled each drawer.  It should save me sometime.

The biggest time waster was going through all the drill bit to find one the right size and sharp.  I tried each one in a piece of oak.  Those that would not cut went into this plastic bottle.  I put the other ones in a small plastic dish.  I did mire cleaning.

Ninety Percent Finished

I worked on the bench some and took the car to Fillmore.

 

It is past time to have the car serviced.  I have added oil twice and is getting low now.  So instead of adding another quart of oil I took it to Fillmore.  It was finished in about thirty minutes to do it.

I bought some lag screws for the bench, and checked on our bank account at Zions Bank.

I picked up the mail. Carol got her new handicap sign.  It is good for two years.   The on above expires this month.

I needed to talk with Shane.  Walking out to house two, I saw two large horse trailers.  Shane was expecting some more hemp plants.  I thought they had come and were in these trailers. They were friends of Shane and stopped on their way to California.

The next thing for the bench was to install some shelf supports.  The table upside down on a pair of sawhorses.  The two supports are show in the above photo.

A pair of wood clamps tightened to either leg and the support is resting on the clamps while I drive some screws through the support.

I attached the bench frame to the legs by drilling two holes through the fame into the leg,  I did that far each leg.  Over half the time I hit a screw from the other direction.  I backed out the screw and screwed in the lag screw.  Then I screwed the other screw.  If that makes much sense.

I found a piece of plywood and was able to cut a piece for the back.

I ripped another sheet in half and was able to make the two shelves..
