Not Much Today

Temple day.  We got home from the Manti Utah temple at 2:30.  I didn't do much and then thought that I would cut down the rest of the corn.
I cut down the last row of corn stalks.  Then I moved the a little south which is to the right in the above picture.  I hope the will compost some there.  I will plant something in the middle of it and use drip to irrigate it.
The above picture is part of the watering system for the chickens.  There was a bad leak in the PVC pipe.  I uncovered the pipe and found a coupling that pulled apart.  I shut off the water and hope to fix it Thursday.

I was going to cut down tomato vines in house one.  I got started and then company come.  More work for tomorrow afternoon.

Corn Stalks and Rain

Last week I bought a furnace filer.  Today I put it in the furnace.  I put a date on it so I will not how long it has been in.  It is recommended that the filter be replaced every month.  I think that I will replace it sometime in mid December.
I filled up this tote with tomatoes, scallions. onions, and beet greens.  This is a sample of CSA weekly box except it would be twice as big.  I took this to the post office.
While I was harvesting the scallions, I noticed the worm dropping on the leaves of a bell pepper plant.  They are the black spots on the left side of the photo.
I then saw this worm attached to the edges of a leaf that it was eating.  It reminded me of a tomato worm,  but this must be a pepper worm.  This is the first time that I have seen any type of worm on our pepper plants.

We drove to Fillmore before lunch for some groceries.  The regular cucumbers were being sold for $.99.  The burpless cucumber were marked at $2.99 each.  We bought two ice cream cones which we ate on the way home.
After lunch I went to work removing the corn stalks.  I removed the twine that was supporting the plants.  It is laying on the ground at the back of the garden.  Then I picked the ears of corn that was two old to be eaten.  I gave some to the chickens.  I cut all the corn stalks.  I took them to the south part of the garden for them to decompose during the winter.  I was raining a little and I got two pairs of gloves that I was wearing wet.
I made this frame to wind the twine.  There is a handle on the left side where I would hold while I wrapped the twine.  It was too big and hard to wrap.
I made a smaller one and it was much easier to wrap the twine.
I cut down most of the tomato plants in house one,  There is one row left on the far west side.  I may get that tomorrow.
All the tomato clips that ere not broken are to be saved for next year.  While I was doing this we had about ten minutes of hard rain.

After supper we went to the post office to get our tote.  Every thing was gone.  Will fill the tote Wednesday morning take it back to the post office.

Company Today

Today we had stake conference.  We drove to Fillmore this morning.  We met in the Millard high school auditorium.  The speakers were very good.  Our dinner was cooking in the oven and when we got home it was almost ready.

We finished eating and watch the church programing on KBY TV.  The doorbell rang.  I went to the door and what a pleasant surprise.  Two of our granddaughters were at the door.
It was Jessica and her Sister Briana.  They were in St George yesterday attending a wedding in the Saint George temple.   Jessica is on the left and Briana on the right.
Carol is between Jessica and Briana.
Then we got a selfie.  Jessica, Carol, Briana, and Merrill.

Richard had been in Orem with his daughter and our granddaughter, Emily.  He stopped and visited us on his way to St George where he will be working this next week.
Later in the evening Eric, Lisa, and Emi, stopped on their way home.  They have been in Disneyland and other places in California.  In the above picture from left to right.  Eric, Carol, Lisa, Merrill, and Emi.  The second selfie today.

Tomato Plants - Gone

A little cool this morning.  The tomato plants in a quart bottle in the kitchen window are rooting nicely.
I put them in these square pots.  The photo doesn't show to much, but in a couple of weeks they will be doing well.
The transplants are a clone of the tomatoes in the above basket.

I transplanted these butterfly bushes yesterday.  This morning I used two bamboo stakes to hold them upright.
Next, I removed all of the tomato plants on the row on the right side except six on the north end.  I was coming back after lunch to finish, but that didn't happen.
While removing the tomato plants there were some that looked like there was no frost damage.  I will check them after they have turned red to see how they taste.
We began removing tomato plants in the west garden.  They were held up with tomato cages made with tree baskets. It was pretty warm so I removed my coat.
the dead tomato plants are laying on the ground.  The conduit pipes were in the ground nearly three feet.  With a pair of vice grips, I was able to pull them out.
I put the tomato vines on the west side of the garden where I have been growing pinion pines and Utah Junipers.  I hope they decay some during the winter.
A view from the west side looking back towards the garage.  The tomato vines are gone.
The tomato cages are on the weed barrier waiting for next year.

Hard Work,But Someone Has to do It.

This morning I began work in house one.
Yesterday there were still a lot of tomato plants hanging on the second row to the right.  It was quite cool this morning so I put on a medium weight coat.  I removed all the tomatoes in the second row.
We, Carol and I, removing the stems of the perennials.  We laid them on this tarp to hall them out to the garden.
There are a lot of pruning at the garden west of the driveway.
Carol cut off the tops off the dahlias and I dug them up.  There was a lot of dirt in the roots.  They are in the large nursery can.  I put them in the garage.
We pulled up the zinnias and put them on the tarp.  It was the heaviest tarp load today.  I had to rest about four times before I got it out to the garden.
This is where I dumped all the frozen plant material.  I will spread it out a little and hope that it will decay some during the winter.
I needed to pick up the drip tamp.  Last year I pulled out the north end of house one and sometimes I pulled in front of house two and three.
I wrapped the drip tape around the frame that I made.  I help it all together with twine.   The picture is of the second one.  It is wrapped with two rows of drip tape.  There are several splices.
The drip tape is gone.  Next year the vines will be trained to go horizontal.  In a space of twelve feet there will be eight horizontal lines.
I pulled up these carrots which I made soup.  Besides carrots there were peas, onions, and peas.  I put in the left over meat loaf from Sunday.  It tasted really good.

Unexpect Freeze in House Six

We returned home from the Temple around 2:30.  I changed clothes and checked out the nursery.
Yesterday I pulled down all the tomato plants on the two rows.  This afternoon,  I removed all of the suppurting  poles.  You can see on either side the remaining poles.
I walked into house six and was shocked at the frost damage.  The cucumber vines are dead.  I turned the thermostat a little lower.  Apparently I turned it too low.
The tops of the tomato plants were also frozen.  The lower parts were okay and that is where the fruits are.
The Black cherry plants that are on horizontal twines were frozen.  I was hoping to watch grow a little more.
After I removed the posts in house six I started removing the plants on the row at the right.  I might be able to remove the rest tomorrow.  There are a couple other jobs that need to be done tomorrow.

Dug Potatoes

After breakfast Carol and I began the potato dig.  There were two rows to dig.  The ground was a little muddy and the vines were dried up.  The first potatoes were Yukon  God.  Most of them were a good size.
This tub had a mix of potatoes.  There were some purple ones,  some russets, and some Pontiacs.
We filled the yellow bucket first and post in the bucket are Yukon Gold.
The above photo is of a potato where one side is spoiled.
Her is one that shows a large spoiled part.  Have no idea what caused it.
The above tree has been outside all summer.  With the threat of frost Sunday night I brought it into the house.  It would stand up by itself so I put the back of a chair against it which held it from falling over.

We drove to Fillmore for a few groceries and a furnace filter.  We got them an then came back home.  While I was in Fillmore I was to have my vision tester and have a medical report signed by Dr. Gross.  I forgot.  I went back and made several trips from the DMV and the doctor's office.  I stopped at the hospital to see Charlene Tuttle.  She was asleep so I didn't disturb her.
I worked most of the afternoon in house one.  There are two rows of tomatoes on the right.  I removed the tomatoes from the first row and a few on the second row.  I hope to finish that tomorrow.
