Planting Tomato Seeds

Saturday morning means three wood working shows.  Breakfast was over with plenty of time for left for watching the shows.  At nine thirty, I went for the mail.  There was none.  I lost all of my files that were on the computer in the little bedroom.   I found them.  I don't know what I did, but I put the cursor on a fill and click.  The plant file appeared.   I tried to print a label and there was nothing.  I made adjustments and printed the label which printed horizontal across down the middle of five labels.  I spent all morning making adjustments.  The preview was perfect, but not the results of the printing. 

I have some packets of tomato seeds that I wanted to plant them.  They should have been planted over a month ago and decided to wait until next year, but in a couple of minutes I decided to plant anyway and would get a late crop in the fall.

I used the potting soil that I bought Tuesday.  I filled 1206 tray with the soil.

I thought that I took two other photos but seemed to have disappeared.  The photo above shows the stick labels.  At the end there are two six packs of Lolo peppers.  I pressed each seed into the soil with my finger and then covered them with more potting soil. I pressed each cell with my finger for close contact with the seed.   I put the tray on the heating pad and sprayed them with water.  Later I carefully water them with a watering can. 

The wind was blowing hard and caused the east door of house five slam open and shut.  the door header was coming apart.  I got screws, and cordless driver to fix the door.  I clamped the header parts to gather and drove screws the plywood.  The plywood is quite dark.   The above photo is from the inside and,

I sprayed the grass that is growing in the top of the pomegranate bush about a month ago.  The grass is dead.  The pomegranate bush is really healthy.

Planted More Tomatoes

I started work in the garden.  I thought I would get a lot done, but had too many interruptions.  Just before lunch we drove to Fillmore where we had two prescriptions filled.  Everyone in the Drug store wore masks.   We went to Fillmore and back in us less than an hour.

I planted a row of tomato plants.  The first three are Cherry Banana.  The next ones are Juliet, and the last four are Cherry Banana

When finished I started the water running down the row.

I made four holes for the Burpless Cucumbers.   Then I put two handfuls of horse pellets in each hole.   Then I put a plant in the hole and backfilled around it.

I have a lot of Burpless cucumber.  I planted four in this row.   There are three plants in each hill.  The were easy to remove from the six pack.  I plan to build a horizontal trellis with tie wire.  Each row will be about sixteen inches above the bottom row.  There may be six rows.  I haven't tried it this way.

The tires on this cart were both flat.  I filled them with air and was able get the trays.

There were a stack of 1020 trays and another stack of 1206 trays.  I took them to the shed to get them out of the hot greenhouse.  The heat melts the trays some.

Shane and his crew are preparing house two for planting a new crop of hemp.

We boxed up more photos and mailed them to different family members.

We had three boxes and three large envelops.  Carol is counting the money.  It wasn't all that expensive.

This evening, Carol and I met with members of the Bishopric and got new temple recommends.

Tomatoes, Potatos, & bees

Saturday morning, Sunday, and Monday.    Only thing on Sunday was picking a few cucumbers.  In a sense it like milking cows.  It has to be done every day of the week.
Saturday Morning:  Carol wanted baked potatoes for Sunday dinner.  There are some vines at the end of the row that is being eaten by grasshoppers.  The leaves are gone.  I dug then up.

During the night the deer came in and ate most of our watermelons.

I put tomato cages on most of the melons to keep the deer from eating them.

I put a smaller cage on a uneaten watermelon.

Here is were the deer have eaten the sweet potato vines.

 I made this trap for yellow jackets.  There is a large wasp in there that I haven't ever seen before.

The humming bird feed was empty.  Carol filled it and I hung it with a long wire.  The yellow jackets have been eating the sugar water.  I put it down low so I could vacuum the yellow jackets.  Our cats might be able to grab a humming being so low.  This afternoon I shortened the wire so that it is way out of  the cat's reach but in easy reach of the vacumn.

I picked to buckets of tomatoes for one of our neighbors.  They are not all yellow.  The Lemon Boy tomatoes are thin skinned and are on top.

I put some spoiled plums in this large quart bottle.  It attacked a lot of yellow jackets.  I put a lid on the bottle and put it in the freezer.  It killed the yellow jackets.  I put it back under the plum tree.  Hope to get some more jackets.

I watched several videos yesterday on how some made a push stick.  The push stick keeps my hand away from the saw blade.    Here it is laying on the driveway.

I was going to spray weeds this afternoon, but there was so much puncher vine with seeds that I decided to dig it out.  It was so rocky that I couldn't dig the up.  I got a small tool and got on my hands and knees dug up a bucket full.  

I got most of them and I will get the rest a little later.  The were many ripe seeds and spraying them would kill them but the seeds would still be there.

Hailstorm, Snow, & Tomato Transplants

Cold this morning.  I checked house six to see if the furnace turned on.  It did.

The first thing this morning was to plant bunch onions.  I prepared the tray yesterday, but run out of time.  I put some seeds in my left hand and used a half teaspoon scoop some seeds from my open hand.  There were five to nine seeds in each of the 105 cells.

I put it on the grow bench.  Some should be germinating by next Thursday.

I dug all the holes and placed a plant above each hole.

I transplanted quite a few tomato plants to house six.  I stretched some twine to make sure that the rows are relative straight.   I put a piece of plywood in front of the holes there I could kneel.  Some areas are wet.

We, Alisha and I, planted all of the sees that she bought.  I bought them and she paid me.  She planted watermelon seeds.  We filled the seventeen inch tray.  Alisha planted three seeds in each cell until she run out of seeds.  There were about fifteen cells.  I planted four Crimson Sweet watermelon seeds in the rest of the cells.  My seeds are pretty old.

A couple of weeks ago I bought five clear covers for 1020 trays.  I put one on the bottom of each tray and poured water into the trays.  The seeds then are watered from the bottom.  I then took them to the heating bench for germination.

We had a heavy hailstorm late this afternoon.  The hailstones pounded hard on the top of the greenhouses.

I transplanted a whole bunch of tomato plants in house six.  This is a view from the west end.  The row on the left was planted a couple of weeks ago.  The tomato row on the left, I planted today.  Some of the plants one the center row was also planted today.  I transplanted the following:  38 gladiator plants; 27 lemon boy; and 4 Beefsteaks.

I picked some asparagus sometime after sunset.  There was not as much because it has been so cold.

I fed and locked up the chickens.  Before came into the house, I walked out to the greenhouses.  As I walked into house five there were two deer.  When they saw me they started to panic.  Instead of going out through the east door they jumped through the bows into house four.  The exited house four through the west doors.  There I saw the third deer.

The Tub and Timer Fix

Monday morning is laundry day.  Carol washed the sheets and dirty clothing from Sunday.   We made the beds.

 One of the faucets at the tub has leaked for a long time.  I tried to fix it a couple of months ago. The valve seats looked ok, but the washers looked bad so I replaced them.  I told Carol last night that I would try again.  I have two new valve seats that I would install.  

I thought that the hot water side was the one that was leaking.  I have to go down in the crawl space and in the far south east corner is the location of the valve.  I would go down and turn off the water and then come back to see if there is any water leaking.  I made this trip three or four times.  The water was still leaking.  I the turned off the water and removed the cold water side.

I replaced the valve seat and gasket, turned on the water, and sure enough the leak had stopped.  There was a tiny nick in the valve seat.

I went to work at the greenhouses.  There was one large slug in the cup of beer that wasn't there yesterday.  The other cups except one contained some small slugs.  You can see the little slugs in the photo above.

The sweet potato slip is well rooted.  I put it in the quart pot.  It is to cold to plant them out side.  It may grow big enough to for another cutting.

 I got another photo of the leeks.  Every time I water them, a little bit of soil washes into the hole.  The force and weight of the water causes some of them to lay down.

The plants in house six was not getting any water.  Strange.  I put in a new battery yesterday afternoon.  I thought I had the water come on every two hours for twenty minutes.  What really happened was the water would turn on every two days for twenty minutes.  I changed it and it is now working perfectly.

There are nine Juliet tomato plants.  I was going to plant one in house six and but two gallon milk jugs filled with water on each side.  The furnace is not working and the two jugs of water would keep them from freezing.  Instead of one I planted all nine.

I stretched a piece of twine from the post on the east end to the cement brick on the left.  I brought a frost barrier.  I will cover them at night and uncover each morning.

It makes a tidy small tent.

I am planning on planting Green Arrow peas tomorrow afternoon.  I started soaking them this afternoon.  We are expecting rain Wednesday.

Many of the plants in house two were getting pretty dry.  I watered everything in house two.

The acorns from last year have been in the fridge all winter.  A month ago I covered them  with potting soil.  I planned on offering them for sale on Face Book.  Ten for twelve dollars with free shipping.  I filled the tublings with potting soil.

I cover the tray with the above template.  I can then fill the cell with out getting soil between the tubes.

 Here is the filled tray.  The white things are pieces of perlites.

I soaked them with water.  Then I poke a pencil in the center of the tube to make a hole for the root.

This is an acorn with a long root.  Some were nearly six inches long. You can see the hair foots.  I cut off the end of some roots because I can't get the root two go down the hole.

This tray has ninety-six tubs.  Each one has an acorn and root.

There was a lot of the grubs.  They were growing inside of the acorn.

This is the acorns are showing  radicals, these are then ones I hope to sale.

The work on the Bray home across the road is beginning to come up. I think they digging a trench for the gas and water lines.
