Planting Corn

The first photo this morning was of the earwig trap.  There was a good bunch of earwigs.

I started the trailing sprinkler on the front lawn watering only on the west side of the sidewalk.  I started east to west and then moved it further to the north and made another east to west.

I picked four bunches of broccoli.  We took three of them and a zucchini to the post office.  They were gone except for the zucchini.

I cut down the two rows of early sweet corn.  I cleaned away all of the stems leaves and a few weeds.

Some flowers were hiding/covering a Chrysanthemums.  I drove in a stake and pulled it towards the stake with some garden twine.

I picked a lot of the dill and stuffed into a cat food bag.  It is in the large nursery can to hold the bag upright.

There is a lot of dill plants in the garden.  There is a full row on the left side of the photo.

I planted three seeds in each hill and covered it with compost.  It is after I watered.

Servicing the Lawn Mower

The trailing sprinkler finished with a little help from me and watered the west lawn.

Mowing the lawn was the number one thing that I wanted to do today.  I bought the lawn mower a in April two years ago.  I haven't ever changed the oil.  Each time when get the lawn mower out to mow the lawn, I think something like this: I will change the oil next time I mow.  Today, I decided to change the oil, replace oil filter, and clean the air filter. 

I looked at the manual and there were no instructions how to drain the oil and how much oil to add.  I went to You Tube, which is my fix it source.  I found one video that was quite long. But it showed me the exact things to do.  I watched short segments of it several time.  I pulled of the plug and put on a clear twelve inch hose.  I then had to turn the yellow valve counter clock wise one quarter turn.   The black oil began to run out.  I needed a pipe wrench to remove the oil filter.

We went to Fillmore to buy a filter and buy some groceries.  The auto parts store didn't have one.  So we got some gas and went to Penny's to buy the filter.

It was time for lunch so I didn't get much done on the lawn mower.  I put some gasoline in the add oil spout which washed out the old black oil.  I added the two quarts of new oil and tightened up the oil filter and the yellow valve.  I started to mow.  I checked for leaks.  It was leaking oil because I failed to tighten the yellow valve.  I tightened it up and mowed the front lawn and part of the back lawn.

I was having a hard time mowing around the honey suckle bush.  I stopped, and cut off a lot of branches with my electric chain saw.  I pulled all of the branches out to the street where I will put them on my truck.

I mowed the rest of the lawn, then the back lawn and then the west lawn.  I dumped the bags twice.  I did some trimming with my cordless trimmer.

The Weekend

I setup the trailing sprinkler Sunday morning.  I checked it several times during the morning.  After it got part way, I pulled the hose further to the north.  I put the stop near the north end of the lawn.  It stopped.  That evening I turned off the water.

Melissa and Derik came for a Saturday and Sunday visit.  They brought with them foot, bags of toilet paper, cookies and candy.   She made a Lot of French fries. fry sauce and scones.  She also brought honey butter. That was our lunch.  The were some other things also.  Melissa cooked Saturday supper.  She had much more food than we could eat.

We had our Sunday services which started with the sacrament and ended with fifty minute video about the Book of Mormon.

She cooked Sunday which consisted of roasted chicken, rice, potatoes.  Soup left over from Saturday afternoon.

Before it was dark I covered all of the bush beans with PVC pieces and plastic cups.  Hoping to protect them from the earwigs.   After dark I went out with a flashlight and found earwigs on the bean plants.  I crushed them buy pushing them into the ground with my finger.  Some got away.

Monday morning I started to pick the sweet corn.  I picked all of the later corn variety.  It took three buckets.

It didn't take long to shuck them.  There were a lot of earwigs in the buckets.

It took a lot longer to blanch and cut the corn off cob.  We packed it into three freezer zip bags, and put them in the garage freezer.

This afternoon I finished the stool that i started Saturday.

This afternoon I put fertilizer on the west lawn.

Pruned Tomato Branches

As soon it was light, I turned off the sprinklers on the backyard lawn.  Then I started the trailing sprinkler.   Later after breakfast I went out to work and the sprinkler was slowly turning and only a little water coming out.  Someone turned on the water at the nursery.  I turn of the sprinkler.

 The trailing sprinkler stopped in the location this morning.
There were several rows of tomato plants that needed pruning.  The above photo is on the north side of the garden. 

I put another wire on the Burpless cucumbers.  I am training the branches to go horizontal.

There are a lot of wild lettuce in the orchard.  There are a lot of small rock there so difficult to dig them up.  I took a chair and a bypass pruner.  I pruned for a while and progress was pretty slow.  The I got the weed eater out to the orchard to cut down the wild lettuce before it went to seed.  The weed eater didn't have much power and would run for a few seconds.  I put the battery on a charger in the kitchen.

This evening after the battery was fully charged I cut down all of the lettuce weeds.  It didn't take very long.  Maybe about ten minutes.

 It is way past time to remove all of the pea vines with the trellis.   I pulled most of the vines off the trellis and began to roll it up.  I started with a tight roll and crawled as I rolled it.  I pulled off some of the vines as I went.  I didn't use the second roll.  I unrolled it on the lawn and then rolled it up in a tighter roll.  I used tie wire to keep it from unrolling.

 I put all of the vines on my compost pile.  Later I swept off all the leaves and dirt.

Another Trip to Provo - Linden

We drove to Linden this morning to take back the chop saw I bought last week and replace it the miter saw.  Before we left I took a few photos.

Shane and the guys started to outline the front of the greenhouses with cement blocks.

There are piles of shredded tree branches in front of houses four, five, and six.  I ran the sprinklers all night on the back lawn.  There wasn't much water.  Someone had left the water that was irrigation the hemp plants south of house six.  I turned it off and we soon went to Linden.

We returned the chop saw.  They gave us credit for the gift cards and $114.00.  I looked for the miter saw and could not find one.  A woman, a Home Depot employee, offered to give me some help.  Go to isle 22 and someone would be there to help.  I waited quite a while and a man, and Home Depot employee, showed me a box containing the miter saw.  He then found a cart and loaded it on the cart. A clerk checked us out.  The man pushed the cart to our car.

We then went to the Provo Homed Depot got a trailing sprinkler.  We gassed up at Sam's Club and then came home. 

Our car started making a strange noise just before we got to the summit.  It sounded like the tire was flat.  After stopping several time I found a piece of black plastic between the front wheels.   When our speed reached 50 it started rubbing the highway. 

I was able to fix it with a drill and a piece of tie wire.

I opened the box and after watching a You Tube video a couple of times I got it set up.

 I put it on the same cart i used for my old Makita miter saw.  I put another half inch piece of plywood on the card.

Here it is and it works really well.

We picked up the trailing sprinkler that I ordered a week ago.  I couldn't get one of the sprinkler arms connected.  I didn't get help by calling the store.  I screwed off the compression nut and pushed the arm all the way in.  I tightened the nut it is working perfectly.  I had to adjust the arm height several times to get it right.  It got stuck trying cross the side walk.

Pulled the Beets

First was breakfast, then cleaning, and then picking the beets.

The beets in the raised bed were getting quite large and inhibited the growth of the ever bearing strawberries.   I pulled all of them.  I cut off all the tops.  The tops went into one tub and the beets went into another.  I cleaned them on the lawn north of the back porch.  I sprayed them trigger sprayer.

We took a tote full of beets and then took our trash out to the dump.

The blue lake bush beans are coming up.  I hope that we don't have problems with the earwigs.  I was going spray them this evening, but I for got. 

After lunch I filled up the back pack sprayer.   I sprayed everything  with Round-up that was west of the dalhais and east of the fence.  There were a lot of puncture weeds and some were pretty big.   I cut them off at the roots and put them in the bucket. 

I cut all of the weeds between the shed and the grape vines.   I had to remove pieces of concrete before I could dig them out.   Most of the weeds wee the wild lettuce.  I put them near the water meter. 

I cut this kohlrabi and cut off all of the leaves.  I also, cut a large broccoli plant.  Both are in the fridge.

 I hung more tomato plants in the south garden.  The horizontal wire sagged so that all of the tomatoes were hanging loose.  I put an eight foot brace to hold the wire up.  It seemed to bow a little.

I put stick under it to keep it from sinking in the ground.

I attached a small board at the bow and put a couple of screws in it.

I found this eight foot board which had a long several splits on the top end.  I glued them together and held it tight with a couple of clamps.

More bait for the earwig in the dahlias.
