Shoes on the Rack

After breakfast Carol filled the shoe rack.

The shoe rack is loaded.  It looks like I didn't build it big enough.  She has more shoes than I thought.

The phone rang and it was Ted Bennett on the line.  He told me that I didn't need a building permit for the shed because it was small and it did not need power or gas.  That was good news.

Shane wants to take a line from the breaker in the laundry to power the lights that are going to be put in house five.  There are several 220 lines that could be used. We had an electric range which took a 220 line.  We don't use that any more.

We took our garbage to the dump.  On the way back there were four deer in our garden.  There was one two point buck missing one of his antlers.

I began work on the shed.  I took one of the benches a part.  I needed two 2x4's eighteen feet and two twelve footers.  I removed all the screws.  There were some screws that broke, and it took me some time get them out.  I was working on the shed for over two hours.

This large trash can contained several years of  wood working stuff.  After lunch I took it two  the dumpster.  It was quite heavy.  I was able to load and unload it by myself.

I worked another couple hours on the shed.  I used the 2x4's to outline the demensions.  I measured diagonals and got it square.  The holes that I made a couple of days ago are in the wrong place.  I have to make new ones on the front and make another hole in the back.

The tape measure was dropped several years ago.  The guides that help keep it rolled up properly broke. I glued on some small pieces of Masonite.

Shoe Rack Finished

A little warmer last night. I got a good start on the shoe rack.  Yesterday, I finished the construction phase.  Today, I applied the Varathane.

I have finished with the first coat of  Varathane.  It took quite a while.  I started with the rack upside down.  I applied it to the bottom of each shelf and both sides and both ends.   It took a lot for the first coat.

While it was drying I dug more holes for the posts.  I poured water in them last night and it was fairly easy digging, but hard to remove the soil when they were very deep.  They needed to be two feet deep.

I then put on the first coat of Varathane.  I painted the bottom of each shelve first.  It took a lot more than the other coats took.  I panted both ends and both sides.  I turned the rack over and painted the top of each shelve. 

I then drove to Fillmore for the posts.  I was going to get three eight footers and three twelve footers.  The twelve foots were not treated.  I ended up getting six eight footers.  I also got two bags of concrete mix.  Shane carried out the two eighty pound bags.

I gave the rack and other coat of Varathane.  When I brought it into house.  It was still a little tacky.  I put it in the closet where it will go.  Carol will fill it with her shoes in the morning.

Shoe Rack Mistakes

I put on a coat and brought the shoe rack out to the patio, began sanding the facing pieces.   I placed it on a couple of blocks so I could sand without having to bend over as much.

The above photo shows the front.  I had hoped to paint today,  but it didn't work out that way.

I sanded both ends.

Yesterday, I put a strip of wood on each shelf.  It wasn't on the shelf, but under it.  It was to keep the shoes from falling out on the back.  Here I made a narrow strip and glued them to the top of each shelf.  There was not room to hold them with the pin nails.  I put a narrow line of glue and held them tight with clamps.

While the glue was setting up I mowed the lawn.  There was some grass clipping, but mostly leaves.  I made trip after trip to the leaf pile until I finished the job.

I made some adjustments to the legs of the shoe rack.  Maybe, pictures tomorrow.  I drove to Fillmore to get some 4x4's.  I need three that are eight feet tall and three that ten feet tall to build a shed to store the tractor, lawnmower and other things that are in house three.  Ropers didn't have any ten footers.  I had them get me some.   I dug a hole last week, and dug five more today.  The ground was so hard that I could only dig five or six inches deep.  I filled them with water three different times.  It will be much easier tomorrow.

Later I called Roper's and told them I would get six eight footers. They said that they had some twelve feet long and the would give me  them for and eight foot price.

More Work on Shoe Rack

Another day good day at the temple.  We got home and my bedroom clock showed 1:11.  I put on my work clothes and walked out to the greenhouses.  Shane, Duston. Duston's girl were working in house six.

They were pruning the hemp plants.  On the left are plants waiting to be pruned.  On the right are the plants after pruning.

I worked on the shoe rack for the rest of the afternoon.  I put a pine face on all exposed plywood edges.  It took a while.  I had to cut the pieces the width of 1/2 inch plywood and thin enough to have a pleasant look.  I guess that I can call it a thick veneer.  One of the shelves was a little wide. I sanded, sawed and chisel.

 I glued two pieces on the back of each shelf to prevent the shoes from sliding out the back.  I couldn't use my pin gun,  I glued and clamped.    The clamps will come off in the morning.

A Shoe Rack for Carol.

Sunday November 3
I walked out to the greenhouse this morning,  Surprise!!! House five is covered with poly.  They said that they were covering house five Saturday.  We left Holden for the temple yesterday at 11:15.  It didn't look like that they would do it.  But the did.

Monday, November 4

 House five is 76 by 30 feet wide. There is nothing in the greenhouse and it looks huge.  The inflation fan is  attached to the poly.  There was no attachments in the shipping box.

I was going out to begin building the shoe rack, and Carol asked me to give the frozen pumpkins to the chickens.  It was thawing and a little water was running down the step.  The chickens was much interested in it.  But they began to eat some by the afternoon.

Now back to the shoe rack.  I am using some old weathered plywood.  I got the above photo of a piece, the condition of the back was really bad.  I didn't take it, but took the one behind it.

Lunch time.  A month ago I picked the green Gladiator tomatoes hoping to have fried green tomatoes.  That never happened.  They are in the garage and they are beginning to turn red.  Carol made the toast and fried the bacon.  I then had a BTL sandwich. It was really good.  The tomato tasted better than any tomato bought at the market.

Duston was in house six pruning the hemp plants.

I ripped the plywood into twelve inch pieces.  I cut the two ends and made three shelves.   I did some sanding which smoothed them out and removed most of the splinters.

I put it together with my pin gun.  I used glue where all wood pieced joined each other.  I need to put on some trim and stain or paint it.
