What I Didn't Know This Morning

I made a mental list of the things that I wanted to do today.  Fertilize and water the strawberries.  Plant Rainbow Carrots,  and prune and hang the tomatoes,  transplant peppers.

I fertilize the lawn and began the watering.  It took about three hours to water.  I moved the hose every thirty minutes.

Yesterday, one of our chickens was killed by a dog.  I took on the dump road and threw it over the fence in the tall wild rye.  I was pruning the tomatoes and every thirty minutes I would move the hose  I worked in house six most of the day.  It was hot but not so bad that I had to quit.

 I planted the rainbow carrots in this small raised bed.

This I did not plan.  Carol was at the raspberry patch.  She started to pull the creeping ??????.  She went back into the house and I started pulling the vines and pruned some roses and current bushes.

The raspberry patch looks much better.  The might be a nice picking.

I shredded all of the plant material.

Today I made hooks with screws and now I can hang shoves, pitchfork,  and hoes.   They have been hard to find because some are laying on the ground.

At the end of the day I did some weeding in the strawberry patch.  I was going to kill it with round-up, but Carol thought differently.  Good thing I followed her council.

I watered most of the garden.  The plants are looking really good.

I didn't get a picture of the weeding I did in house six.  I want to plant the peppers on the north side of house six, but the weeds are to bad.  I dug up all the weeds and hopefully I can plant them Wednesday.

Irrigation Most of the Day

My water turn started this morning at seven.  I always let the water run to Raymond Stephenson first to clean out all of the junk that comes first in the pipes.  I then run the water to the Dearden's.  I can come back and put the cap on the pipe.  I went back to the main ditch to start our water turn.  Instead I let Raymond have the water for an hour because we still had some planting to do.

Yesterday, I pulled the weeds out of the carrots.  I got the picture this morning.  They are looking good.

I had a little more room in the hoops.  I planted three burpless cucumber plants.  They are in the above picture.  I covered the with two pieces of plywood.

There are two rows of Tomato plants.  The top row was planted a couple of days ago.  The bottom row is the Celebrity.  There four of them.  We those Wednesday.  We also planted some cherry tomatoes and Can't think of the name now.

The wind has been blowing all day.  I took several pictures and this was the best one.  The two plants in the right corner are garlic.

I wanted to cover the tomato plants.  They haven't had an opportunity to harden.  I had a bunch of baskets to be used for sphagnum  moss.  I put a wet piece of round newspaper on one basket and put another basket on top of it to hold it in place.

I tied a square piece of burlap to the basket to provide a little shade.  I tied a short piece of twine to each corner and then tied it to the wires making the basket.

This one is the smaller basket.  Instead of using paper as earlier I used burlap.

I did the same with larger baskets except I used two theme clips on each basket opposite from each other.  The two rows in the center of the picture are rows of tomato plants.  The ones on the right have not been covered.  We did all of this in the hour before we took our water turn.

I ran water on the orchard.  Here is one place that needs cleaning.  Pips all over the place.

I did some pruning in house six.  And at the end of the day I made twenty tomato hooks called Toma Hooks.

Quick Trip to Provo

I drove to Fillmore from my 9:00 appointment with Dr. Gross for a diabetes check up.  Everything was good.  I wanted a picture of our doctor and so here it is.  While in Fillmore I bought some chicken scratch.

As soon as I got home, I did the watering in house two and then we drove to Provo to get a few things.  We got a bunch of stuff at Sam's Club.  A couple of weeks ago I bought a watermelon at Sam's Club.  It wasn't ripe so I fed it to the chickens. I told the a person at the service desk that the watermelon did not taste good.  The gave me a credit voucher which I would use to buy a new one.  When I checked out they charged me for a new melon anyway.  We had lunch at a Chinese restaurant.   We stopped at the Red Barn for some ice cream.  We bought four large Celebrity tomato plants at Walmart.

When we got home, I watered the plants again in house two.  I took my shovel, pitchfork, and weed whip to clean out the ditch.  I checked the weed whip for gas.  There was a heavy rain that lasted about five minutes.  It was good.  I started it up and cut down a few weeds and discovered that the weed whip was out of line.  I had to go back to the garage and get some more line.

Back at the ditch cleaned out the weeds.  A lot of road base gravel that they used for the sidewalk had run into my ditch.  I worked there for a couple of hours.

I had a little lunch.  A piece toast spread with a thin layer of honey.  I worked in the strawberry patch removing the annual weeds for another hour.  Carol came out and we got it pretty much cleaned out.  I also pulled all of the weeds in the carrot patch.  Most were the wild lettuce.

Planted Tomatoes

We went to Fillmore this morning to get some groceries, make a deposit at Zion's bank and Credit union, and the get some gas for the tiller.

I called Phil at the Dramm company and he told me how to the sprayer working.  I did what he told me to do.  It didn't work.  I called again and gave me some more help.  I got it working.

Pressure Sprayer

After being at the Manti Utah temple all morning, we were home at 12:45.  I had a quick lunch decided to clean the pressure tank.  It has been hot in the greenhouses.  I need to spray a coat of greenhouse paint to create a shade for the plants.

I bought the sprayer and tank to the west side of the house where a hose bib is located.  I sprayed water in the tank several time and finally got it pretty clean.  I removed and cleaned the intake hose.  I also removed the agitator hose.   I didn't know what to do next.  I found the number of the Dram corporation and gave them a call.  Phil, the person that would help me had gone home.  The receptionist told me to call in the morning and ask for Phil.

I also sprayed the weeds around the yard and in the garden.  I filled the tank again and sprayed the weeds between the lawn and the road.

I planted these beans yesterday and a couple of them have grown six or seven inches since yesterday afternoon.

Pole Beans, Onions, and Sweet Corn

A lot to do today.  I watched a little of the news while eating breakfast.

Richard came over the first thing this morning and worked on the tiller.  He put a capful of B-12.  It is to clean out the carburetor.   He started the tiller and it was the same.  It sounded like it would get a burst of gas and then all small part of gas.  He thought that we should do some tilling.  He pushed to house six and tilled a strip on the south side.  It worked pretty good.  We then brought it back to house two.

I had four trays of onions that were getting pretty big.  I planted the Walla Walla first.  No pictures yet.  Nest was the Candy onions, and last were the Kelso onions.  The photo above shows the Kelso onions.  I planted two rows in the same wide furrow.  They were about four inches apart.  The Kelso onion is supposed to be the largest onions.    Some of the onions were over twelve inches long.  They were also root bound.  I cut off the tops and the part of the roots.

This shows a six pack of onions.    I had to cut each cell in the six pack to get the plant out.  They were so root bound that they were wedged in the cell.

I cut off the tops of all six plants with my scissors at the same time.

 I planted the pole beans.  These are planted in the hoop house.  There is one tray of plants.

Carol and I dug out the weeds around the Irises and in other areas of the garden.

Next is the sweet corn.  I tilled up and down and then back between the two passes with the tiller.

The tiller worked pretty good.  It ran better than it did this morning.
