Two More Boxes

Yesterday, we talked about going up north today.  I planned on doing that, But Carol was in pain level 10.  And also, snow was in the forecast.  We didn't go.  I wanted two more boxes.

It is hard for me to do a section, stop, and take picture.  I have two pictures, and both show the same thing.

1. I cut the pieces.
2. The 20 inch slats for the sides and bottoms.  It takes eleven.
3.  two 7/8 square rods 12 7/8 long.

Above is one of the completed potato boxes.  The two are the same size.

Instead of ripping 2x4's into 1/4 inch slats I use some lath that I have.  I have some snow fence made out of lath.  I took out the lath and used if for the slats.   I can build the boxes much faster and with more accuracy.  There is several rows of snow fence west of the pot shed.  I cut off a piece seven or eight piece.  I then stopped at house three were there was another roll, but was dry.

 The above snow fence was inside of house three.  I cut off sever or eight pieces.

Tuesday Afternoon

We were up early for the temple this morning.  It was raining some when we left and once in a while there was a trace of snow.  We had a good day.  We came home right after our shift was over.  There was no snow on the road, but the roads were wet most of the way home.

We had lunch.  After lunch I started to work some on our taxes.  That was it.

Weekend: Saturday-Monday

I watched my three Saturday morning wood working shows.  The project on one of the shows was way to complicated and used more equipment that most weekend wood workers have in the shop,

There were a lot of people working in house two.  They are harvesting the flower buds.  They worked all day and some where there in the evening.

I hung up some of the tomato plants by their branches.  There are some small tomatoes.

Monday January 20 

Lisa and Emi came last night and spent the night with use.  We had a good late breakfast.  Later, I gave them a tour of house two, four, five, and six.

Last week our washing machine became somewhat crippled.  The agitator limped along.  Late this morning, I called  Adam Remkes.  He was here a little before lunch.  He and his worker had in fixed in about fifteen minutes.  Carol then washed the sheets without any problem.

We drove to The Fillmore Costa Vita where Lisa treated us with some Mexican food.  We came home and we worked on our Picture Frame.  Emi is so good with these electronic devices. We called Amazon for instructions.  With the help Amazon we got it fixed.

After they went home, Later in the evening, I tried to upload some photos and couldn't.

Finished Potato Box?

The weather forecast was for snow starting at four this morning.  After I showered and dressed, I opened the back door and there was nothing.  It was snowing when we had breakfast.

I started pushing the snow off the driveway.  Carol went to the post office.  I removed the rest of the snow.  I also did the front sidewalk.  There was about an inch and a half of light snow.  Some had partially melted were the sun had warmed up the side walk yesterday.

These cow figures were on top of the cabinets.  I took them down.  They were covered with dust and cobwebs.  Carol cleaned them and I put them in the window.  They are more at eye level.

A Box for Potatoes

The dr-awers in my dresser  are so full, it is hard to put anything in.  I pulled the drawer below my sock drawer and found it full off Carol's old bank statements.  The newest was dated 2001.  Some were much older than that.  I shredded most of them and came back a little later and shredded the others.

I decided to make a wooden box for the potatoes.  I wanted to make them stackable so that they would not take up as much room.  For years we have stored them in Nursery containers.  The space between the slats would allow air circulation.

I had what I considered a good plan in my mind.  You will see the box a little later.  I cut out a lot of pieces for the corners, sides, ends and the bottom.  I hooked my pin nailer to the compressor and turned it on.  Air was leaking out of the pressure tank.  It quickly pumped up, shut off, the air slowly leaked out.  The pump turned on and leaked out again.  This process continued for some time.  I then shut it off.  I pulled of the hose and replaced it again.  I poured soapy water on it. It was leaking at the hose connection.  I replace it again and stopped the leak.    The use of glue and a pin nailer would be fast and easy.

I tested the nailer.  The nail went in part way and stuck to the nailer.  I finally got it loose, but would not work.  I tried it several times,  I let the air out of the tank and filled it again,  That didn't help.  I gave up and watched several You Tube videos.  T videos didn't help any.  I couldn't find a manual that came with it.  And by the way I got it in early January and here it is mid January now.  I watched another video that was somewhat longer than the first.  It showed how to remove a pin jam.  I did it and there was a jam which I easily removed.  I started everything up and guess what?  You are wrong.  It was working.

Here is the completed box.  It is bigger than what I thought.  It took a long time, several hours, to finish, but it is well built.  I took it in the house to show Carol.  She was impressed.

Here I put some onions in the box.  It then put some hand grips on both ends.

Carol suggested that I put a divider in.  This I did.  on  the left are copra onions and on the right are large onions of which I have forgotten the name.

I have a couple of ideas to make a box bigger tomorrow.

Back to the dresser drawer.  I shredded most every thing.  There were some birthday cards and two letters from Elizabeth.

This evening I went to a Hemp Grower meeting.  It was a good meeting, but quite long,  I could not hear some of the speakers.    A few people left at 7:30.  I also left.   Some of the growers were asking questions, that didn't apply to me.

Work on Shed Over for While

I started working on the shed fairly early today.    A better and faster way of supporting the shelves came to me since yester day

I took and eighteen inch 2x4 and removed a fourteen inch wedge.  It is illustrated in the above photo.  I placed the 2x4 on the table saw sled.  Weights are put on a piece of plywood at maybe twelve degree angle.   The weights keep the plywood from moving as I slowly push it through the spinning blade.  I drilled six holes the wider area.

This shows the completed shelves.   I keep forgetting to get more pictures showing more detail of this procedure.  I attached the shelf support three different ways.

 I put three screws in each shelf support.  It sagged some.  I then put in a piece of plywood above the shelf brace and screwed it to the stud.  That worked pretty good.

I glued a short piece of 2x4 below the shelf brace.  There is a screw from the top of the self brace into the glued 2x4.  That held really well.

 The last one I did was made out of an eighteen inch 2x4.  I cut off a wedge from the 2x4.  It was fast and easy way.  I didn't have to wait for any glue to dry.

We drove to Fillmore to change our social security deposits to State Bank of Southern Utah from The Wells Fargo Bank.  The first checks will be deposited on the second or third of February.  It took about thirty minutes to do that.

When we got home I went back to work on the shed.  I put in a hook for the highchair.  I am moving things out of the garage into the shed and this is one of them.  The space above the back header between the rafters is open.  Wind might blow snow and rain through those spaces.

I made pieces of plywood to fit between the rafters.  I cut them so that they would have a snug fit.  They were so tight that most likely they would never come.  However, I did hold them in with screws.  Later I will put a three inch boarder of plywood to cover the empty space under the rafters.

New things happening at the nursery.  House six which was the storage house was cleaned out.  Most of the stuff was put into house three.  Quite a lot of it was taken to the dump.  I was able to salvage some before it went to the dump.  They covered with a plastic.  The outside of it is white.  The inside is black.  It is there to keep the hemp plants shaded part of the day.

Jim Burns brought a  truck load of plants from Delta, Utah, this afternoon.  He backed close to the west door of house four.  They were loaded onto carts and pulled into house four.

The truck is unload into house four.  Most of the hemp plants were lousy with aphids.

Another Afternoon at the Shed

We spent the early morning at the Manti Utah temple.  We had lunch at the temple and soft ice cream at the Top Spot in Salina.

Yesterday. I made a shelf for the shed.  It went pretty well, except the shelf arms began to sag.  I had to put some supports on the stud under the shelf arm.

I glued the support piece to the shelf arm and held it in place with a screw.  

The above photo shows the arm brackets in place.  The arm bracket on the end is screwed to the back wall.

This photo shows how it is attached to the stud.  At this point I didn't screw the support to the stud because the glue has not cure.   The support might break if the glue was somewhat fresh.

I put the shelf in place for the photo.
